February 15, 2016 | Women's Water Polo
LA JOLLA, Calif. – The top-ranked UCLA women's water polo team lost its first game of the season when it fell to second-ranked USC, 8-6, in the championship game at the 2016 Triton Invitational on Sunday evening. Overall, the Bruins were 3-1 on the weekend.
In Sunday morning's matchup against No. 7 UC Davis, the Bruins topped the Aggies 5-1. Mackenzie Barr led the squad with two goals, while Devin Grab, Charlotte Pratt, and Alexa Tielmann each netted one. Freshman Rachel Whitelegge recorded two assists in the second quarter.
Defensively, UCLA held UC Davis scoreless for the first three quarters. But Bryn Lutz put one past freshman goalkeeper Carlee Kapana in the fourth quarter to notch the Aggies' lone goal. Kapana tallied 11 saves overall, two of which were against the power play.
In the championship game, the Trojans held the Bruins scoreless in the first quarter while netting two of their own. A trio of Bruins—Ashley Zwirner, Kelsey O'Brien, and Barr—found the back of the net in the second quarter to put UCLA on the board. USC held a 5-3 lead at the half. India Forster and Aubrie Monahan each netted a goal in the third quarter, but it failed to match the Trojans' three.
Although the Bruins held the Trojans scoreless in the fourth quarter, they were unable to overcome the deficit. As time expired, UCLA dropped its first game of the season to its crosstown rival.
The Bruins return home with a 7-1 record on the season. Next up, the squad heads to UC Irvine to face the Anteaters on Friday, Feb. 19. The match takes place at 7 p.m. PT.
