Records Fall at MPSF Championships

SEATTLE, Wash. – The UCLA track and field team closed out the MPSF Championships with two event winners and several personal bests Saturday at the Dempsey Indoor Facility on the campus of the University of Washington.

Sophomore Steele Wasik closed out the heptathlon in school record fashion. Wasik won the grueling multi-event with a meet record 5,783 points, bettering the school record held by All-American Marcus Nilsson. Zack Bornstein closed out his first career heptathlon with 5,228 points to finish 10th.

For the third straight year Nicholas Scarvelis left the MPSF Championships with the winning hardware. Scarvelis uncorked a mark of 65-2.75 to earn the three-peat. Sophomore Braheme Days tossed an indoor personal best of 63-9.75 to finish second. Freshman Dotun Ogundeji was 10th at 58-10.

In the women's shot put the Bruins tallied 11 key points as junior Torie Owers led the UCLA trio with a third place finish on a throw of 54-6.50. The freshman duo of Stamatia Scarvelis (51-5) and Ashlie Blake (51-4.25) follows in sixth and seventh place, respectively.

In the high jump Sage Stone used a personal best to finish third overall Stone cleared seven feet for the first time in his career, leaping over the bar at 7-0.50. Cody Crampton followed in fourth at 6-10.75.

On the track in the 60m hurdles Misana Vilitz ran under eight seconds for the second consecutive day as the sophomore clocked a 7.99 to finish fifth overall. Sophomore Leon Powell finished fifth in the 60m with a time of 6.78.

Freshman Rai Benjamin got the men's team two points by placing seventh with a time of 47.57. Senior Nick Hartle finished third in the 800m with an indoor personal best time of 1:48.41.

Overall the men finished third with 73 points while the women were 11th with 34 points.

The NCAA Indoor Championships will be held in Birmingham, Ala., and will begin on Friday, March 11.
