UCLA DMR Places Seventh at NCAA Meet

March 12, 2016 | Track & Field

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The UCLA men's distance medley relay started off the NCAA Indoor Championships in impressive fashion Friday night at the Birmingham CrossPlex.

In arguably the fastest field in the event's history at the championship the Bruins finished in seventh place with a time of 9:34.39.

The quartet of seniors Ferdinand Edman, Nick Hartle Austin O'Neil and sophomore Joe Herrera entered the meet with the 10th best time in the field. The UCLA record breaking squad is the first DMR to medal since the Bruins finished sixth in 2010.

Edman got the Bruins into great position after his 1,200m leg and then handed off to Herrera who passed the baton to Hartle in second place after his 400m. Hartle then seized the lead after his 800m and handed off to O'Neil who brought it home in exciting fashion against one of the fastest DMR mile fields in meet history.

Sophomore Steele Wasik was unable to go in the heptathlon due to injury. Wasik set the UCLA school record with a score of 5,783 at the MPSF Championships.

The trio of UCLA shot putters will close out the action at the NCAA Indoor Championships for the Bruins at Noon PT.
