Big Personal Bests Highlight Husker

LINCOLN, Neb. – The UCLA track and field team capped off the Frank Sevigne Husker Invitational with some big personal bests Saturday in the Bob Devaney Sports Center.

UCLA sophomore Steele Wasik catapulted himself into the national meet conversation with a personal best in the heptathlon. Leading after day one, Wasik won the 60m hurdles to start the second day and didn't look back as he posted a score of 5,599.

Senior Nicholas Scarvelis remained undefeated in 2016 in the shot put as he recorded a throw of 64-5.75. Sophomore Braheme Days was fourth with a throw of 60-9.25 and freshman Dotun Ogundeji was fifth at 59-6.75.

In the women's shot put, Ashlie Blake unleashed a huge personal best. Blake recorded a mark 54-1.75 to finish second. Her throw was a personal best by over three feet.

On the track, senior Ferdinand Edman clocked a personal best to win the 3,000m. Edman crossed the line in 8:04.49 and was followed in third by Austin O'Neil, who also recorded a personal best with a time of 8:04.72.

In the 60m sophomore Leon Powell improved his season best to 6.70 to finish third overall. Freshman Suzie Acolatse was fifth with a 7.52 in the women's 60m.

In the women's mile freshman Julia Rizk won her heat with a time of 5:00.68 and was closely followed in second by Emily Scharmann with a 5:04.37. Both were making their indoor debuts.

UCLA will return to the indoor oval when it heads to Seattle, Wash., to compete at the Husky Classic. The meet will be held on Friday Feb. 12 and Saturday Feb. 13.
