SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. - Senior Louise Ridderström closed the 2016 Bruin Wave Invitational with a blistering 5-under par 67 to force a playoff with teammate junior Bronte Law and won it on the second-extra hole with a great up-and-down from the bunker to claim her first collegiate victory, while the fifth-ranked Bruins were victorious in the team competition by 14 shots.
UCLA shot a 4-over 292 in its final round to post an overall score of 4-over 868. It is the second win of the season for the Bruins, who took home the trophy at the Nanea Pac-12 Preview in November.
Ridderström entered the final round five shots back of the overnight leader, teammate and freshman Lilia Vu. She made birdies on the first and eighth holes and then continued her great round with birdies on the 10th and 11th. A birdie on #14 got her into a share of the lead before she dropped a shot at #17. But the senior came right back at the home hole to drain a 15-footer and get in the clubhouse at 3-under 213.
Law birdied her opening hole and also gained a shot on the seventh to balance bogeys on #5 and #8. Three straight birdies on holes #9-#11 gave Law the lead, but bogeys on #13 and #17 eventually forced a playoff with Ridderström. Law was 1-under (71) for her final round. After pars on the first playoff hole, both Bruins landed in the same bunker on the second. Ridderström was able to get up-and-down to finish off the first victory of her career.
Vu recorded a career-best finish of T-5 (+1, 217) after shooting a 76 (+4) on Tuesday. She made birdies on the seventh and 11th holes to go with four bogeys and a double. Freshman Bethany Wu tied for 18th with a three-round total of +9 (225). She shot a 78 (+6) on Tuesday with a birdie on the seventh, five bogeys and a double. Sophomore Erin Choi shot a non-team scoring 81 (+9) and tied for 76th (+30, 246). She made three birdies on the seventh, eighth and 10th along with five bogeys, two doubles and a triple.
Of the three Bruin individuals, junior Hadas Libman recorded the best finish with a T-46 (+19, 235) after shooting a final-round 4-over 76. Starting on the 10th hole, she birdied the sixth and the seventh to go with six bogeys. Sophomore Aliea Clark tied for T-52 at +20 (236) after a +9 (81). Opening on the first, she made a birdie on the seventh, while making eight bogeys and a double. Sophomore Lydia Choi, paired with Clark, had an 8-over 80 to place in a tie for T-59 at +22 (238). She birdied her opening hole, as well as the ninth, and made eight bogeys and a double.
The Bruins are back on the course March 21-23 at the SDSU March Mayhem at The Farms Golf Course in Rancho Santa Fe, Calif.
