
UCLA Sweeps Jim Bush Collegiate Invite

LOS ANGELES – The UCLA track and field team opened the outdoor season in impressive fashion as the Bruins claimed both the men and women's titles at the Jim Bush Collegiate Invitational, Tuesday in front of a live Pac-12 Networks audience at Drake Stadium.
The women outdistanced the field with 161 points as Arizona followed at 133 and Washington State rounded out the teams with 107. The men ran away with the win, posting 151 points, while Washington State scored 127.5 and Arizona was third with 104.5 points.
In her return to the oval after a redshirt season, senior Kylie Price made a statement by winning the long jump with a wind-aided mark of 21-4.75. She also hit a wind-legal mark of 21-4.25. She then stepped onto the track and anchored home the Bruins to a new meet record in the 4x100m relay with a time of 44.12.
Price later ran away from the field in the 100m to clock a time of 11.43. That time equals the 10th best all-time at UCLA. Sophomore Jessie Maduka was second with a personal best time of 11.68. In the men's 100m, sophomore Leon Powell won with a time of 10.42. Price finished off her return by taking second in the 200m with a time of 24.03. Freshman Angie Annelus won the event in an impressive 23.63.
UCLA freshman Stamatia Scarvelis instantly made an impression in the hammer. The newcomer in her first collegiate outdoor season launched a throw of 193-11 on her first ever attempt in the event to rank seventh all-time at UCLA. She bettered that mark with a throw of 195-8 to win the event.
Scarvelis later went on to win the discus with a throw of 168-8 while Ashlie Blake was third with a throw of 151-6. Scarvelis capped off her day by finishing as the runner-up in the shot put with a throw of 50-0.50. Junior Torie Owers won the shot put with a throw of 54-7.50.
In the steeple, junior Emily Scharmann posted a meet record with a personal best time of 10:40.75. That time now moves her up to seventh all-time on the UCLA list. In the women's 800m senior Kim Mackay won her UCLA outdoor debut in a time of 2:13.06.
In the men's 1,500m senior Ferdinand Edman took control and posted a winning time of 3:50.27. Making his UCLA debut, freshman George Gleason was fourth with a time of 3:54.61.
Also making her outdoor debut in a UCLA uniform, freshman Greta Wagner cruised to the victory in the pole vault with a mark of 12-8. Junior Zaybree Haury won the javelin with a throw of 144-11.
Junior Austin Hazel got his outdoor campaign off to a fast start as he leaped to a huge personal best in the long jump, posting a mark of 25-0 on his final attempt. Sophomore Idrees Bernard was third at 23-11.75 while freshman CJ Alumbres followed in fourth at 23-3.25.
Bernard used a wind of 3.4 to leap out to a winning mark of 50-10.75 in the triple jump. Junior Reed Scale won the pole vault with a clearance of 16-1.25.
The Bruins went 1-2 in the 200m as Powell won his second event, posting a meet record of 21.20 while freshman Rai Benjamin followed at 21.29. The Bruins also finished 1-2 in the 400m as Joe Herrera won with a time of 48.16 and Jonny Moniz followed at 48.19.
In the 110m hurdles sophomore Misana Viltz posted a lifetime best of 13.96 to win the event. In the women's 100m hurdles freshman multi-athlete Dominque Beltrez was second with a time of 13.91. She was also third in the long jump with a mark of 19-2.75.
The Bruins really maximized the points in the shot put as sophomore Braheme Days won the event with a throw of 63-10.50. Freshman Dotun Ogundeji was second at 61-8.25.
UCLA also earned huge points in the discus as Ogundeji won the event with a throw of 181-1. Nicholas Scarvelis was second at 174-3 while Days finished third at 170-8.
The Bruins will take the rest of Spring Break off and return to the track for the Bruins Legend of Track and Field Invitational. The two-day meet will begin on April 1. Drake Stadium will also be home to the Legends Distance Carnival on April 1.
