Bruins Dominate at Wolverine Invite

March 06, 2016 | Women's Water Polo

ANN ARBOR, Mich. – The second-ranked UCLA women's water polo team opened play at the Wolverine Invitational on Saturday with two wins.  The Bruins defeated Loyola Marymount, 17-4, before steamrolling George Washington, 22-5.

UCLA presented a well-balanced attack in its match against No. 15 LMU.  Eleven different Bruins found the back of the net, led by freshman Lizette Rozeboom with a hat trick.  Ashley Zwirner, Devin Grab, India Forster, and Mackenzie Barr each tallied two goals; six Bruins notched one apiece.

Dominating the pool defensively as well, the Bruins held the Lions to four goals on 19 shots.  Freshman Carlee Kapana and veteran Alex Musselman split time in the cage.  Kapana put up five stops, while Musselman tallied four.  The Bruins totaled nine steals and forced 12 turnovers in the 17-4 win.

UCLA was a force to be reckoned with in Saturday evening's tilt with George Washington.  Firing on all cylinders, the Bruins netted four in the first three and a half minutes to set the pace of the game.  Rozeboom, Forster, Barr, Tielmann, and Charlotte Pratt compiled seven goals in the first quarter to give UCLA a 7-2 advantage.

The rest of the game was more of the same as UCLA lit up the cage while only allowing three GWU goals.  13 Bruins scored in the 22-5 rout, led by Rozeboom's season- and team-high seven goals.  Dominating on both ends of the pool, UCLA forced 21 turnovers, tallied 11 steals, and held the Colonials to a 25 percent shooting average.  In the cage, Musselman and Kapana split time again.  Musselman registered four saves and Kapana had three.

On Sunday, the Bruins face No. 5 Michigan at 7:40 a.m. PT, followed by Bucknell at 1:40 p.m. PT.
