
Track Battles the Elements on Saturday

LOS ANGELES – The UCLA track and field team overcame the unusual wet conditions to post some impressive marks on Saturday at the Rafer Johnson/Jackie Joyner-Kersee Invitational held at Drake Stadium.
The women's shot put proved to be one of the strongest events of the day for the Bruins. UCLA finished 1-2 in the collegiate competition as junior Torie Owers won with a season best 55-0.75 while sophomore Stamatia Scarvelis launched a big personal best at 54-11.50. Scarvelis also placed second in the hammer with a throw of 189-9.
Making his UCLA debut, freshman Michael Burke led a UCLA 1-2 finish in the high jump with a leap of 7-1. Junior Cody Crampton followed in second with a mark of 6-11.
In the javelin AK Turner took top honors in the collegiate division with a throw of 187-10. In the women's competition junior Zaybree Haury was third at 154-5.
Freshman Greta Wagner once again won the collegiate portion of the completion in the pole vault as she cleared 13-1.50. Sophomore Elleyse Garrett followed in second at 12-7.50.
On the track the Bruins went 1-2 in the 3,000m as Daniel De La Torre cruised to victory with a time of 8:29.97. Freshman George Gleason followed in second at 8:32.21.
The Bruins will continue their busy home schedule next weekend with a highly anticipated dual meet against Texas A&M. The meet is scheduled for Saturday, April 16. Select Bruins will also compete at the Mt. SAC Relays that will begin on Thursday, April 14.
