No. 3 Bruins Win First Two at UCSB Invite

January 21, 2017 | Women's Water Polo

SANTA BARBARA -- The No. 3 UCLA women's water polo recorded two wins against ranked opponents Saturday, as it defeated No. 10 Pacific, 15-4, and No. 15 Indiana, 20-5. The wins came as part of the UC Santa Barbara Winter Invitational. Bruin Maddie Musselman scored seven goals on the day, while teammate Rachel Fattal added six.

In the opener against Pacific, scoring did not begin until the 2:35 mark of the first quarter, when Fattal scored the first of what would be three goals on the game. Less than a minute later, Alexis Angermund tallied her first of the season and first of what would be three goals of her own on the contest. She added one more before the end of the frame, which gave the Bruins a 3-0 lead.

Musselman got scoring started in the second quarter with the first of her three goals, before Pacific's Rachel Krieger netted the Tigers' first. Goals by Kodi Hill, her sixth of the season, and Devin Grab, her sixth, made the score 6-1 before Pacific's Kyra Christmas cut the Tigers' halftime deficit to 6-2.

The third quarter saw the Bruins double their output, as they scored six in the frame. Angermund and Musselman each scored two, while Fattal added one and Alys Williams scored the first of her two on the game. Two third-quarter Pacific goals made the score 12-4.

That was the end of Tiger scoring on the day, as the Bruins tacked on three more in the fourth. Fattal completed her hat trick, while Williams added her second of the game and third of the season and Alexa Tielmann netted her fifth of the year to round out Bruin scoring.

In the second game of the day, the Bruins once again scored three first-quarter goals, keyed by Fattal's first. Bronte Halligan added her first of the year and first of three on the game, while Kelsey O'Brien added her second of the season.

Five different Bruins found the net in the second quarter, as Musselman, Halligan, Lizette Rozeboom, Fattal and Williams spread the wealth to put the UCLA halftime lead at 8-2.

The Bruins topped their six-goal third quarter in its match against Pacific with a seven-goal third frame in the nightcap versus Indiana. Six of the goals came from three players, as Williams, Musselman and Rozeboom all completed hat tricks. Tielmann added her sixth of the season, as the Bruin lead stood at 15-4.

Musselman added a fourth-quarter score for good measure, while Fattal completed her second three-goal game of the day and Halligan saw her third goal hit the back of the net. Angermund followed her strong first game of the day with another goal and Kodi Hill netted the final goal of the day, her seventh of the year.

The Bruins will return to action tomorrow, when they face No. 8 Michigan (10:20 a.m. PT) and No. 11 UC San Diego (3:00 p.m. PT) and complete their weekend at the UCSB Winter Invitational.
