No. 25 UCLA Takes Down CSU Bakersfield, 75-66

LOS ANGELES – A strong second half helped No. 25 UCLA record a 75-66 win over CSU Bakersfield at Pauley Pavilion on Wednesday evening.

Aaron Holiday totaled 16 points, seven rebounds and six assists for the Bruins (6-1). Thomas Welsh registered his fifth double-double in seven games this season, totaling 13 points and 10 rebounds.
 
Kris Wilkes scored nine of his 11 points in the second half for UCLA, while G.G. Goloman rounded out the Bruins' list of double-figure scorers with 10 points.

Jarkel Joiner led all scorers with 20 points for CSU Bakersfield (4-4).

The Bruins controlled the paint throughout the game, outscoring the visiting Roadrunners by a 44-16 margin down low. CSU Bakersfield made 6 of 11 three-pointers before halftime and entered the locker room trailing UCLA, 29-27. The Roadrunners shot just 4 of 22 from long-range in the second half.
 
The Bruins came out of the locker room at halftime, outscoring CSU Bakersfield by a 9-1 margin through the first 4:06 in the second half. Leading 38-28 with 15:54 to play, UCLA pushed its cushion to as many as 16 points (56-40), with 9:38 to play.
 
UCLA opened the second half having made 10 of 13 shots before pushing its lead to a game-high 16 points.
 
CSU Bakersfield managed to trim its deficit to as few as seven points, 68-61, with 1:26 to play. Wilkes made a pair of free throws at the 1:16 mark and Jaylen Hands followed with a pair of free throws with 51 seconds to play, giving UCLA a 72-61 advantage.

In the first half, CSU Bakersfield raced to a 16-7 lead with 9:50 to go before halftime. A jump shot from Joiner at the 10:50 mark and an ensuing three-pointer by Damiyne Durham with 10:22 to go helped the Roadrunners secure a nine-point cushion.
 
Holiday twice cut through the Roadrunners' defense, scoring five consecutive points to help key a Bruins' scoring run. Welsh's three-pointer – UCLA's first of the game – tied the game, 23-23, with 4:32 to play before the Bruins entered the locker room at halftime with a two-point cushion.
 
UCLA and CSU Bakersfield nearly shot the same percentage in the first half. The Bruins knocked down 10 of 29 shots (34.5%), while the visiting Roadrunners hit 10 of 28 shots (35.7%).
 
The Bruins will return to action against Detroit Mercy on Sunday afternoon in Pauley Pavilion. Game time is 6 p.m. (PT). UCLA's game will be televised by the Pac-12 Network. Earlier that day, the UCLA women's basketball team will host UC Santa Barbara at 1:30 p.m. (PT).
