TULSA, Okla. โ The No. 7 UCLA men's tennis team defeated the Tulsa Golden Hurricane, 7-0, Monday at the Michael D. Case Tennis Center. The match began a weeklong stretch of indoor action for the Bruins.
Gage Brymer and Maxime Cressy got the Bruins off on the right foot with a 6-3 win over Jarod Hing and Daniel Santos of Tulsa. In an early hole, the 23rd-ranked Golden Hurricane pair of Or Ram-Harel and Majed Kilani answered with a 6-3 victory over UCLA's Joseph Di Giulio and Austin Rapp.
For the fourth consecutive match, the UCLA pair of Martin Redlicki and Evan Zhu had a chance to clinch the doubles point in a sudden-death scenario on Court 1โand for the fourth consecutive time, the No. 16 pair did just that. Facing off with Tulsa's duo of Dominic Bechard and Francois Kellerman, Redlicki and Zhu were forced into their second tiebreaker of the four-match span. This one again went the way of the Bruins, 7-6(5), and UCLA had its first point of the evening.
Following his lengthy doubles win, Zhu made quick work of Tulsa's Dominic Bechard in singles, 6-3, 6-2. Austin Rapp then picked up his fifth singles win in six dual-match chances and first on Court 5, 6-2, 6-2, over the Golden Hurricane's Kellerman. Staggs then delivered the clinching point for the Bruins, with a 6-3, 6-4 win over Tulsa's Mitchell Pritchard on Court 4.
The Bruins and Golden Hurricane played out the remaining matches, as reigning Pac-12 Player of the Week No. 73 Redlicki (6-3, 6-4 over No. 115 Kilani) and No. 112 Cressy (7-5, 6-2 over Santos) added straight-set wins of their own. Then, in a showdown of top-ranked singles players, No. 19 Brymer and No. 23 Harel battled to a tiebreak third set, which Brymer grabbed after a long battle, 13-11.
Next up for the Bruins is a trip to Charlottesville, Va. for the ITA Division I National Men's Team Indoor Championships. Play will begin Friday, Feb. 17 and continue through Monday, Feb. 20. The draw will be revealed Tuesday. The Bruins reached the semifinals in last year's tournament.
