No. 7 Bruins Defeat No. 9 Trojans at ITA Indoors

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. -- The No. 7 and eighth-seeded Bruins defeated No. 9 and ninth-seeded USC in the first round of the ITA Team National Indoor Championships Friday, 4-3. The Bruins move on to the quarterfinals and a date with Virginia tomorrow.
In doubles, USC's team of No. 35 Nick Crystal and Laurens Verboven defeated the Bruins' pair of Gage Brymer and Maxime Cressy on Court 2, 6-3. With their backs against the wall, the UCLA pair of Austin Rapp and, making his dual-match debut, Ben Goldberg, rallied from a 3-1 deficit to defeat the Trojans' Rob Bellamy and Jack Jaede on Court 3, 6-4.
In yet another sudden-death situation, the No. 16 duo of Martin Redlicki and Evan Zhu battled USC's team of No. 32 Brandon Holt and Riley Smith down to the wire. Despite an early 4-1 deficit, the Trojans would eventually clinch the doubles point with a 7-5 win on Court 1.
The Bruins did not cave after they lost the doubles point, as No. 19 Brymer defeated the Trojans No. 36 Logan Smith (6-1, 6-3) and No. 112 Cressy followed with a win of his own over No. 97 Bellamy (6-3, 6-2), both in straight sets.
The teams traded points over the next three decisions, as the Trojans' Crystal evened the score with a 6-3, 7-6 (5) win over Zhu on Court 3. The Bruins' Austin Rapp responded to a lost first set to Thibault Forget to capture victory on Court 4 (2-6, 6-3, 6-1). Then, No. 119 Jack Jaede of USC was able to rally to defeat Logan Staggs, 4-6, 7-5, 6-2.
That left the final point on Court 1 and a duel between UCLA's No. 73 Redlicki and USC's No. 13 Holt. An 8-6 tiebreak win by Holt in the first set was a sign of the tight finish the match was in for. Ultimately, it was Redlicki, who won the second and third and captured the overall win (6-7 [6], 6-3, 6-4) for the Bruins.
The Bruins will meet No. 1 and host Virginia in the quarterfinals of the ITA Team National Indoor Championships. Play will begin at 3:30 p.m. (PT) Saturday.
