No. 10 Bruins Drop Blue Devils, 4-3

LOS ANGELES -- The No. 10 UCLA men's tennis team continued their winning ways at Sunset Canyon Tennis Courts Thursday, when they defeated Duke in their penultimate non-conference match, 4-3. Logan Staggs posted the clinching point for the Bruins, who moved to 7-0 at home.
The Bruins looked primed to take the doubles point with multi-game leads on Courts 1 and 3. The team of Ryan Dickerson and Jason Lapidus of Duke picked up the first doubles decision of the match with a 6-3 win over Gage Brymer-Austin Rapp on Court 2, as things began turning the way of the Blue Devils. On Court 3, the Blue Devil pair of Catalin Mateas and TJ Pura completed their comeback from a 0-3 hole to take the set and the match of Maxime Cressy-Ben Goldberg, 6-4.
Cressy was unfazed by the doubles loss, as he bounced back with a straight-set win over Lapidus, 6-4, 6-2, to even the overall tally. Then, on Court 3, Evan Zhu defeated No. 94 Nick Stachowiak by a 6-3, 6-1 score to give the Bruins their first lead of the afternoon.
The Bruins (10-4) never looked back, as No. 42 Martin Redlicki coasted throughthe second set after taking a 9-7 first-set tiebreaker. His 7-6 (7), 6-1 win over Spencer Furman on Court 2 gave the Bruins a 3-1 lead. After blanking Duke's TJ Pura in the first set, Staggs was pushed to a third set, which he won (6-0, 4-6, 6-3) to clinch the overall victoryfor the Bruins.
The teams played out the remaining matches, of which the Blue Devils (8-6) claimed both. Duke's Ryan Dickerson rallied against the Bruins' Austin Rapp on Court 5, 5-7, 6-2, 6-1, while No. 11 Brymer fell to Mateas on Court 1, 4-6, 6-4, 6-1.
The Bruins will wrap up their non-conference schedule on Wednesday, March 29, when they host UC Irvine. Play will begin at 1:00 p.m.
