Bruins Breeze Past UCI in Non-Conference Finale

March 29, 2017 | Men's Tennis

LOS ANGELES -- The No. 10 UCLA men's tennis appeared ready for conference play in defeating UC Irvine at Sunset Canyon Tennis Courts Wednesday, 7-0. The Bruins, who did not drop a set on the day, will return to action Friday when they host No. 32 Washington in the Pac-12 opener for both teams.

UCLA's doubles team of Gage Brymer and Austin Rapp picked up the first win of the day with a 6-4 decision over the Anteaters' pair of Sebastian Heim and Luis Lopez on Court 2. Then, with a chance to clinch the point, the UCLA (11-4) Court 1 duo of Martin Redlicki and Evan Zhu improved to 10-2 on the dual-match season with a 6-4 win of its own over Luca Marquard and Mason Hansen of UC Irvine (6-11) to take the early edge.

The bottom courts finished quickly in singles, as Maxime Cressy and Austin Rapp coasted to straight-set wins on Courts 6 and 5, respectively. Cressy defeated the Anteaters' Vatsal Bajpai, 6-1, 6-2, while Austin Rapp handled Bruce Man-Son-Hing, 6-3, 6-1, to give the Bruins a 3-1 advantage. No. 39 Redlicki saw his opportunity to pick up a second clinching point of the day, which he took, with a 6-2, 6-3 win over UCI's Luca Marquard on Court 2. With the win, Redlicki improved to 11-0 on Court 2, and 12-2 overall, on the dual-match season.

Bruins Logan Staggs and Evan Zhu each needed a first-set tiebreaker, but both players powered through to give themselves momentum heading into their second sets. Staggs went on to defeat Hansen on Court 4, 7-6 (6), 6-2, while Zhu took care of Lopez on Court 3, 7-6 (5), 6-3. Then, in a battle on Court 1, Brymer held off Heim for a 7-5, 7-5 win and a sweep of the Anteaters.

UCLA moved to 8-0 on the non-conference home slate, and will look to improve on that mark when they head into Pac-12 play Friday. The team will host Washington at 3:00 p.m. before taking on Oregon 24 hours later at Sunset Courts.
