KAPALUA, MAUI, HAWAI'I - Fresh off a win at the Gifford Great 8 Collegiate Match Play, the seventh-ranked Bruins return to stroke play starting on Monday at the Anuenue Spring Break Classic. The three-day tournament runs through Wednesday at the Kapalua Bay Course's par-72, 6,012-yard layout.
The scoring fivesome for the Bruins will consist of junior Erin Choi, sophomores Lilia Vu and Bethany Wu and freshmen Mariel Galdiano and Clare Legaspi. A trio of Bruins, senior Hadas Libman and juniors Lydia Choi and Joo Seo, will be playing as individuals. Play will begin each day at 7:45 a.m. HT/10:45 a.m. PT with a shotgun start. The UCLA scoring group will start on holes #8-#11 on Monday, while the individuals will begin on holes #13-#15. Live scoring will be available here.
Joining the Bruins in the 15-team field, along with host Hawai'i, are #1 Stanford, #3 Arizona State, #32 Colorado, #42 San Jose State, Albany, Fresno State, Gonzaga, Mercer, Osaka Gakuin, Santa Clara, Seattle, UC Davis and Utah Valley.
The Bruins have a pair of wins during the 2016-2017 season after winning earlier this month at Brentwood Country Club. UCLA defeated Oregon (4-1) in the quarterfinals, Colorado (3-2) in the semifinals and USC (3-2) in the championship. In their last stroke-play event, the Bruins finished second by one shot to Stanford at the Bruin Wave Invitational (Feb. 27-28) in San Luis Obispo. UCLA has four Top Three finishes in stroke-play tournaments this season, including a win at the Stanford Intercollegiate (Oct. 14-15).
Vu, the team leader in scoring average at 72.7, went 3-0 at the Gifford Great 8 after winning the Bruin Wave. She was the only player not to finish over par in San Luis Obispo, shooting an even-par 219, including an opening-round 3-under 70. Her first collegiate victory marked her third Top Five finish of the season, as she also placed second at the ANNIKA Intercollegiate (Sept. 25-27, -10, 206) and tied for fifth at the Stanford Intercollegiate (Oct. 14-15, +1, 143).
Galdiano is second in scoring average at 72.9 and tied for third at the Bruin Wave (+4, 223), going 2-1 at the Gifford Great 8. Like Vu, she also has three Top Five showings, finishing second at the Nanea Pac-12 Preview (Oct. 24-25, -4, 215) and T-5 in the single round of stroke play at East Lake (Oct. 31, -1, 71). Wu, who went 1-0-2 at the Gifford Great 8, is third on the team in scoring average at 73.9. Her season-best finish was a T-8 at Stanford (+2, 144), while she also has three additional Top 20s.
In her season debut, Erin Choi placed 13th at the Bruin Wave (+8, 227). She was the lone player in the field under par during the final round, posting a 1-under 72. Choi went 1-1-1 at the Gifford Great 8. Legaspi, who was also 1-1-1 at the Gifford, played as an individual at the Bruin Wave, finishing sixth (+5, 224). It was her second Top 10 of the season, as she was eighth in the single round of stroke play at East Lake (E, 72).
Libman will be playing in her fourth event of her senior season and her third as an individual. She tied for 31st at the Northrop Grumman Regional Challenge (+7, 220) and tied for 56th at the Nanea Pac-12 Preview (+23, 242). Seo is also playing in her fourth event and third as an individual, tying for 58th at the Bruin Wave (+25, 244) and tying for 59th at Nanea (+26, 245). Lydia Choi made her season debut at the Bruin Wave, tying for 61st (+26, 245).
