EDMOND, Okla. - Thanks to a second-round 66 in his second 18 holes on Friday, freshman Hidetoshi Yoshihara holds the overnight lead at The Maxwell at the Oak Tree Golf Club.
Yoshihara was seven shots better from his morning session to his afternoon round. In round one, he shot a 3-over 73, making a birdie on #11 and four bogeys to put him in a tie for 26th. Yoshihara came alive during round two though, recording a 4-under total to put him in first (-1, 139). He birdied his opening hole, the third, and also gained strokes on #8, #10 and #12 to get to red figures for the day. Following a bogey on #13 and six straight pars, Yoshihara birdied his final hole, the second, to put him as the lone player in the field under par through 36 holes.
As a team, the Bruins were 15 shots better in the afternoon, shooting the best second round of all teams at 6-over (286) to move from 12th to seventh after 36 holes. UCLA was +21 (301) in round one.
Sophomore Patrick Murphy is tied for 22nd (+6, 146) after 36 holes. He shot a 5-over 75 (T-40) in his opening round, making a birdie on #11, four bogeys and a double. Murphy improved four shots in his second round, shooting a 1-over 71. He made birdies on #8 and #12 and three bogeys.
Junior Tyler Collier is tied for 56th (+12, 152) after notching a pair of 6-over 76s. In round one, he birdied #12 and #17, adding six bogeys and a double. In his second trip, Collier birdied the eighth and made three bogeys and two doubles.
Junior Corey Shaun is tied for 60th (+13, 153). He opened with a 7-over 77 (five bogeys, one double), but rebounded with three birdies in his second round on #10, #12 and #1, adding six bogeys and a triple for a 6-over 76.
Sophomore Cole Madey is also tied for 60th. Following a 10-over 80 in which he made two birdies (#5 and #12), six bogeys and three doubles, he was seven shots better in the afternoon thanks to a 3-over 73. He made two birdies on #11 and #2, three bogeys and a double.
