SANTA CRUZ, Calif. - Junior Corey Shaun and sophomore Cole Madey tied for the best individual finishes for the Bruins, tying for 16th, as UCLA placed ninth at the Western Intercollegiate at the Pasatiempo Golf Club.
After finishing his second round early on Sunday with a 5-over 75, Madey was magic in his final round, posting a 5-under 65. He made seven birdies on #11, #15, #2, #4, #6, #7 and #9 to go with just two bogeys. He was +4 (214) for the tournament. Shaun was even par (70) in round two and recorded a 3-over 73 in his final round, making a pair of birdies on #7 and #9 and five bogeys to also tally a score of 214.
Freshman Hidetoshi Yoshihara tied for 35th (+8, 218). He finished up a 3-over 73 for his second round and followed that with a final-round 74 (+4). He made an eagle on his last hole, #9, as well as a birdie on #15, adding three bogeys and two doubles. Junior Tyler Collier and sophomore Patrick Murphy each tied for 53rd (+12, 222). Collier completed a 4-over 74 in the morning and followed it up with a 2-over 72 in his last 18 holes. He made five birdies on #11, #14, #7, #8 and #9, as well as seven bogeys. Murphy had a 75 (+5) in round two and was one shot better with a 74 (+4) in his final round. He made birdies on #11 and #14, four bogeys and one double. Sophomore Phil Delisi tied for 65th (+15, 225). He shot a 76 (+6) in his suspended second round, which finished early Sunday, and then posted a 77 (+7) in his last 18 holes. He eagled his final hole, #9, and also made a birdie on #11, eight bogeys and a double.
The Bruins were +36 (1086) for the tournament. After completing their second round with a 17-over 367, UCLA was nine shots better in the final round (+8, 358).
Next up for UCLA is a trip to The Maxwell (April 14-15) at Oak Tree National in Edmond, Okla.
