UCLA Drops Pac-12 Opener to Cal, 2-0

September 28, 2017 | Men's Soccer

LOS ANGELESMilan Iloski recorded three shots, while Brian Iloski registered two shots on goal and Kevin Silva made three saves as the UCLA men's soccer team dropped its Pac-12 opener to California, 2-0, on Thursday night from Drake Stadium. The Bruins played in front of a crowd of 3,285, the fifth-largest home crowd in program history.

"Unfortunately not the start we wanted for both our conference season and to the beginning of this match," said head coach Jorge Salcedo. "We didn't start out on the front foot like we should at home. We showed a lot of urgency in the second half and a lot of fight to get one-goal back that would have put us in a good spot to try and get the second one to create some momentum.  Unfortunately we were on the wrong end of the result tonight."

UCLA led California (6-2-0, 1-0-0) in shots, 10-9, including 6-5 in shots on goal, but Drake Callender made six saves for the Golden Bears to collect his third shutout of the season.

California scored the opening goal of the match in the 13th minute as Joshua Morton's shot rebounded off of Silva right to Samuel Ebstein who took a high shot into the top of the goal.

The Golden Bears pushed their advantage to 2-0 in the 57th minute when Christopher Grey served a ball into the box that found Shinya Kadono for a header to the far post.

UCLA pushed the pace in the second half looking to cut the deficit. The Bruins took four shots in less than a minute late in the period with Milan Iloski, Brian Iloski and Blayne Martinez each with chances to score but Callender would come up with three of his six saves over the stretch to keep the match at a two-goal advantage.

The Bruins return to Drake Stadium on Sunday to face No. 11 Stanford on Sunday at 5 p.m. The match is part of a doubleheader as the Bruin women's team plays Oregon State at 1 p.m. with both matches being televised live on the Pac-12 Networks.
