No. 17 UCLA Tops UCSB, 4-2, in Home Opener

January 19, 2018 | Women's Tennis

LOS ANGELES โ€“ The No. 17 UCLA women's tennis team was challenged by visiting UC Santa Barbara, but proved to be too much in a 4-2 win over the Gauchos at Los Angeles Tennis Center. The match marked the first on the Bruins' home courts since the 2016 finale, due to construction on the Mo Ostin Basketball Center.

UCSB jumped out to an early advantage after taking the doubles point, but UCLA countered with the first three wins in singles play. Jada Hart occupied Court 1 and did her job there, clinching the win for the Bruins.

The Gauchos' Stephanie Yamada and Amanda Atanasson set the tone in doubles, defeating UCLA's newcomer-veteran combination of Sophie Bendetti and Kristin Wiley, 6-2, on Court 3. Clemson transfer Ayan Broomfield, playing with Gabby Andrews on Court 2, quickly pulled the Bruins even with a 6-2 win over Lise Sentenac and Elizaveta Volodko. That left the doubles point resting on the shoulders of the Court 1 teams, made up of UCLA's reigning Pac-12 Doubles Team of the Year and UCSB's senior tandem. Palina Dubavets and Natalie Da Silveira of the Gauchos ultimately answered the call, defeating Terri Fleming and Hart, 6-4.

Broomfield made the most of her UCLA debut, dropping just three games (6-2, 6-1) to Atanasson on Court 3 and pulling the Bruins even. On neighboring Court 2, Fleming quickly followed suit with a straight-set win over her own, dispatching Da Silveira, 6-1, 6-3. Andrews placed the Gauchos on the brink of elimination with a 6-3, 6-1 win over Sentenac, but Yamada took care of Wiley, 6-3, 6-4, to cut the Gaucho deficit to 3-2.

Hart captured the first set from Dubavets with little trouble on Court 1 and looked poised to do the same in the second, but the former TCU Horned Frog would not make it easy. When a Dubavets shot missed wide, Hart rejoiced with a season-opening win clinched.

Next up for the Bruins is ITA Kickoff Weekend, set to begin Friday, Jan. 26 and carry over through Saturday. UCLA will head to Lexington, Ky. for its matches, starting with North Carolina State Friday (11:00 a.m., PT) and continuing with either Kentucky or Northwestern Saturday (time TBD).
