No. 9 Bruins Blank Bulldogs, 4-0

February 23, 2018 | Women's Tennis

LOS ANGELES โ€“ The No. 9 UCLA women's tennis team made quick work of visiting Fresno State Friday at Los Angeles Tennis Center, blanking the Bulldogs by a 4-0 score. The match represented the first half of a doubleheader with the Bruins' men's team.

Alaina Miller did the honor of clinching the win, as the finishing Bruins on Courts 3, 4 and 5 picked up straight-set wins.

Ena Shibahara and Miller cruised through their doubles match, blanking Bulldogs Juliane Triebe and Olivia Noble by a 6-0 score. That left the Bruin Court 3 duo to watch the remaining matches, which Fresno State needed if it hoped to take the doubles point. That would not happen, though, as No. 38 Jada Hart-Terri Fleming won its Top-50 matchup, taking down No. 49 Emma Wilson and Georgia Lawson on the top court, 6-3. The Court 2 match between UCLA's Gabby Andrews and Ayan Broomfield and Fresno State's Alessia Dario-Katerina Stloukalova was suspended with the Bruins leading, 5-2.

It was a race to the finish in singles play, as each Bruin recorded a first-set win. Broomfield quickly notched the Bruins' first win in singles play, taking down Juliane Triebe on Court 3, 6-0, 6-4. No. 40 Abi Altick followed suit, dispatching Georgia Lawson of the Bulldogs on Court 4, 6-2, 6-1. Almost simultaneously, No. 99 Alaina Miller of UCLA finished her straight-set defeat of Alessia Dario, 6-2, 6-0, to clinch the overall win. Courts 1, 2 and 6 were halted.

UCLA returns to action Saturday when Pac-12 foe and No. 34 California invades LATC for a noon start to the teams' non-conference match. The Bruins split their two contests with the Golden Bears in 2017, dropping a 6-1 decision up north before topping them, 4-3, at the Sunset Canyon Tennis Courts.
