CSUN Pots Pair of Second-Half Goals to Down UCLA 2-1

September 16, 2018 | Men's Soccer

LOS ANGELES – Wolfgang Prentice and Daniel Trejo scored second-half goals to lead visiting CSUN to a 2-1 win over No. 11 UCLA in Sunday night's non-conference tilt at Wallis Annenberg Stadium.

The Bruins (4-2) led the contest after 45 minutes thanks to a PK goal from freshman midfielder Matt Hundley, but the Matadors (6-2) responded with a strong second half to secure the result. UCLA had the chance to knot the scoreline with another spot kick in the 77th minute, but junior forward Mohammed Kamara shot wide left.

Hundley put the Bruins on the board in the 24th minute with a standout individual effort, earning a PK after he was taken down while making a move to get past his defender. Hundley stepped up for UCLA's first penalty kick of the year, firing a hard shot into the top-left corner for his third goal of the campaign.

The Littleton, Colo. native was responsible for UCLA's best other scoring chance in the first half, shaking off a jersey-tugging defender at midfield and then making a run up the middle before uncorking a 20-yard shot that was saved by CSUN keeper Henrik Regitnig.

The Bruins did an excellent job in the first half of containing one of the nation's most potent offenses – CSUN entered the contest in the top-10 nationally in team goals – holding the visitors to just one shot, a long-range effort that was blocked before reaching UCLA keeper Justin Garces.

The Matadors got into a rhythm in the second half however, parlaying that into a pair of goals over a six-minute span.

Prentice was the first to find the net for the Matadors, knocking home a rebound in the 61st minute after Garces made a nice diving save of a Daniel Trejo's initial shot.

A few minutes later, CSUN took the lead for good after Trejo made a sliding strike to tip in a cross from Johnny Rodriguez.

The Bruins created a golden opportunity to equalize in the 77th minute as junior midfielder Alexis Triadis got free in the left side of the box before being dragged down from behind for UCLA's second PK.

UCLA ended the game outshooting CSUN 13-10, though the teams recorded nine shots apiece in the second half after the Bruins outshot the Matadors 4-1 in the opening stanza.

Garces made a career-high four saves in the loss.

UCLA is next in action on Saturday, Sept. 22 at UC Santa Barbara. Live stats and stream links will be available on UCLABruins.com.
