PEBBLE BEACH, Calif. - The 24th-ranked Bruins take a break from stroke play to start the week, heading to the Monterrey Bay peninsula for the Cypress Point Classic at the Cypress Point Club.
Eight teams are participating in a bracket-style format with similar play to that of a Ryder Cup, with six golfers per team, as Monday morning's action will be fourball (quarterfinals), Monday afternoon's play will be foursomes (semifinals) and Tuesday's format will be singles (final). Each school will play in all three rounds, with championship and consolation action.
UCLA, seeded third, will draw No. 6-seed Illinois in Monday morning's fourball, with the winner taking on the winner of No. 2 Georgia Tech and No. 7 California in Monday afternoon's foursomes. The other side of the bracket features No. 1 Duke against No. 8 Alabama and No. 4 Stanford versus No. 5 USC.
Monday's fourball play for the Bruins will begin at 8:36 a.m. off the 10th tee. Junior Devon Bling will team up with sophomore Bryan Wiyang Teoh against Illinois' Adrien Dumont de Chassart and Giovanni Tadiotto. Senior Hidetoshi Yoshihara and junior Eddy Lai take on Varun Chopra and Brendan O'Reilly at 8:48 a.m. and sophomore Sean Maruyama and freshman Chaz Aurilia face Michael Feagles and Tommy Kuhl at 9 a.m. Monday afternoon's foursomes will begin around 12:30 p.m., while Tuesday's singles will start at 8 a.m. No live scoring will be available for the tournament.
The Bruins took part in this tournament in 2016, finishing in third place.
