SANTA BARBARA, Calif. -ย Junior Mac May posted a double-double with 12 kills and 15 digs, while senior Savvy Simo added 13 kills and five digs, but the Bruins fell in three at UC Santa Barbara on Wednesday. Set scores were 25-16, 25-16, 28-26.

Sophomore Kelli Barry had 11 digs, junior Jenny Mosser recorded eight kills and redshirt sophomore Emily Ryan and redshirt freshman Lexi Hadrych each tallied four kills. The Bruins (5-4) hit .252 for the match.

The only leads for the Bruins in the opening set were at 1-0 and 2-1. Even at four, the Gauchos (9-1) scored three in a row and seven of nine to go up by five, eventually winning the set by a score of 25-16. Hadrych, Mosser and Simo each recorded three kills, May added six digs and Barry posted three digs. The Bruins were out-hit, .469 to .303.

UCLA never led in set two. The Bruins trailed 19-16 before dropping the next six points to fall, 25-16. May had five kills in the second, while sophomore Hawley Harrer added three digs. The Bruins were out-hit .393 to .138.

The third set featured 20 ties and nine lead changes, as the Bruins had four set points, but could not prevail. The largest lead for either side was three for UCLA at 24-21, but the Gauchos scored the next four points to earn their first match point. UCLA scored the next two to earn a fourth set point, but UCSB countered with the next three to win the third, 28-26. Simo recorded nine kills in the third, May added six kills and seven digs and Barry posted six digs. The Bruins were out-hit, .341 to .289.

The Bruins open up Pac-12 Conference play on Wednesday, Sept. 25 at 7:30 p.m. at Pauley Pavilion presented by Wescom against USC. The match will be televised on Pac-12 Networks.
