No. 4 Women's Tennis Stops Saint Mary's, 7-0

LOS ANGELES โ The fourth-ranked UCLA women's tennis team did not drop a set en route to a 7-0 win over visiting Saint Mary's on Saturday afternoon.
No player surrendered more than four games in a set for the Bruins (3-0), who secured their third shutout in as many tries. Freshman Abbey Forbes clinched the victory, capping a run of dominating performances started by fellow freshman Sasha Vagramov and junior Abi Altick. Redshirt senior Jada Hart added a win in her 2020 dual-match debut, while junior Annette Goulak and sophomore Elysia Bolton rounded out the list of winners. For good measure, the Gaels did not tally more than two games on any of the doubles courts.
The second-ranked combination Bolton and Hart, who won the Oracle ITA National Fall Championships doubles title in November, logged a strong start to its dual-match season. The pair dropped just one game against Mariia Kozyreva and Danielle McIntyre on the top court to get a result in the books. Then, with Forbes and Goulak leading by a score of 4-2 on Court 2, Altick and Vagramov shined in their first match together. The pair dropped Lene Mari Hovda and Gabriela Tevez, 6-2, on Court 3.
Altick, Forbes and Vagramov each raced out to 6-1 first-set wins to get singles play underway. No. 108 Vagramov, playing on Court 6, notched another 6-1 victory in the second set to increase the UCLA lead to 2-0. Altick one-upped her teammate on the next court over, posting a 6-1, 6-0 result versus Aubane Ville to move the Gaels toward elimination.
Forbes, ranked No. 6 in the nation, would seal the deal on Court 2. The freshman improved her record to a team-best 15-2 and 3-0 in dual matches with a 6-1, 6-2 triumph over Jordan Harris to make it 4-0.
Hart, who had not played in an official match since November, looked no worse for wear on Court 3. The nation's ninth-ranked player posted a 6-1, 6-2 defeat of Hovda to pick up right where she left off and improve her record to 13-4. UCLA's third double-digit winner of the early season, 99th-ranked Annette Goulak, improved her mark to 12-2 with a 6-3, 6-2 win versus McIntyre on Court 4.
The top court matchup featured a top-15 showdown between No. 14 Bolton and No. 15 Kozyreva. Tied 4-4 in the first set, Bolton took charge for a 6-4 start and seized momentum going into the rest of the match. She would finish the job for her best ranked win of the season thus far, 6-4, 6-3.
The Bruins return to action Sunday, when they host UC Santa Barbara for an 11 a.m., PT start.
