Bruins Return to Familiar Territory as Indoor Season Continues

LOS ANGELES โ€“ UCLA's track and field team continues its indoor regular season this week with the Don Kirby Elite Invitational in Albuquerque, N.M., and Husky Classic in Seattle, Wash. The Bruins' sprinters and field team make up most of the roster heading back to New Mexico while a contingent of UCLA's squad makes the trip to the Pacific Northwest. The team has already competed in both locations twice this season.

LAST TIME OUT
Freshman sprinter Chinyere Okoro shined for the Bruins at last week's New Mexico Collegiate Classic. The Pleasanton, Calif., made her 200m debut for the Bruins and clocked a time of 23.84 for ninth place overall, moving into fourth on the UCLA all-time indoor list in the event. With Makenzy Pierre-Webster's time of 24.14, the No. 4 (Okoro), No. 6 (Catherine Leger), and No. 8 (Pierre-Webster) positions on UCLA's all-time indoor 200m record list are held by current freshmen.

Okoro went on to take fifth place in the 60m dash with a time of 7.49 in the final. She won her heat and took the third-fastest time in the prelims at 7.46, the sixth-fastest time in UCLA indoor history in the event. The men's 60m saw sophomore Myles Webb take fifth-place overall (6.78). He posted the second-fastest preliminary time of the day at 6.75, a PR-tying time that matched his current No. 5 mark in UCLA indoor history.

Junior Alyssa Wilson continued her dominant indoor season with victories in the weight throw (21.85m, 71-08.25) and shot put (17.16m 56-03.75). She has now won seven of the 10 throwing events in which she has competed this year.

DON KIRBY ELITE INVITATIONAL (Feb. 13-14)
The Don Kirby Invite kicks off at the Albuquerque Convention Center on Thursday, Feb. 14 and runs through Friday's meet program. Thursday's competition is slated to open with the women's long jump at 1:00 p.m. MT/12:00 p.m. PT. The women's shot put gets the action going on Friday at 7:30 a.m. PT, with the day's competition concluding with the women's 4x400m relay (1:30 p.m. PT).

Wilson is in action for the Bruins on day one of the Don Kirby Invite in the women's weight throw competition, as the junior looks for her fourth victory in the event this season. Wilson's mark of 22.10m (72-06.25) in the event stands as the fifth-best throw in the country this year.

Senior Harrison Schrage leads a trio of Bruins โ€“ junior Matthew DeRoos and redshirt freshman Alex Enos โ€“ in the men's long jump on day one. Schrage won the long jump competition at the Dr. Sander Invite (Jan. 23) in New York City with a leap of 7.51m (24-07.75), the fifth-best mark in UCLA indoor history.

Thursday's competition wraps up with the men's and women's 200m competitions. Okoro is slated to toe the line with four additional underclassmen in India Turner, Kyrah Johnson, Maddy Doane, and Kenyla Miles.

Day two at Don Kirby opens with the prelims for the men's and women's 60m hurdles and is followed by the 60m dash heats. Sophomore Kenroy Higgins II leads the Bruin men in the event, entering the day with a season-best time of 6.64 (UW Indoor Preview) that ranks eighth in the country. Okoro and Miles are both set to double with appearances in the 60m on Friday morning.

Friday's program concludes with the women's 4x400m with the Bruins set to send out the quartet of Shae Anderson, Meleni Rodney, Maddy Doane, and Catherine Leger. Anderson made history earlier this season by breaking the UCLA indoor school record in the 400m, going 53.46 in her event debut at the Dr. Sander Invite (Jan. 25). Rodney ranks fourth on the all-time UCLA indoor 400m list with a time of 53.80 that she posted in February 2019.

HUSKY CLASSIC (Feb. 14-15)
The UCLA distance contingent is heading back to Seattle for the Husky Classic, with the two-day meet kicking off on Friday, Feb. 14.

Senior Riley Kelly is set to lead the Bruins in the men's 800m, coming into the competition with a season-best time of 1:50.75 that he set at Dempsey Indoor at the UW Invitational (Feb. 1) Freshman Mason Ratkovich also toes the line in the men's race, while fellow first-year Morgan Calcagnie (2:16.51) gets the call in the women's competition.

Sophomore Gwyneth George leads a quartet of Bruin women โ€“ including Paige Carter, Cassandra Durgy, and Lilly Schmidt โ€“ in the women's mile. George makes her first appearance in the event since the UW Invite (Feb. 1), a performance that saw her clock 4:48.55 for a personal-best time and the No. 8 time in UCLA indoor history. Five Bruin men toe the line in the men's mile, including junior Chris Morzenti, who recently clocked a personal-best time of 4:04.65 in Seattle at the UW Invite.

Christina Rice and Colin Burke set to compete in the women's and men's 5000m competitions, with each runner looking to top their respective historic performances last time out. Rice clocked the third-fastest women's indoor 3000m time in UCLA history at the UW Invite at 9:20.02, while Burke ducked under 8:00.00 for the first time in his indoor career, going 7:50.34 in the men's race for the No. 5 all-time indoor mark.

NEXT UP
The Bruins are back in action Saturday, Feb. 22 for the Alex Wilson Invitational in Notre Dame, Ind. The competition is held at Loftus Sports Center.
