Women's Tennis Earns Shutout of Golden Bears
February 21, 2020 | Women's Tennis
LOS ANGELES – The No. 2/7 UCLA women's tennis team extended its home shutout streak Friday, as it defeated No. 18/45 California by a 7-0 score at Los Angeles Tennis Center.
Freshman Sasha Vagramov clinched the win for a team-high fourth time. Vagramov, junior Abi Altick and freshman Abbey Forbes each turned in straight-set victories for the Bruins (8-1). Sophomore Elysia Bolton, junior Annette Goulak and redshirt senior Jada Hart each won in three sets after dropping the first. UCLA has outscored opponents, 29-0, in home matches this season. The Golden Bears dropped to 1-2 with the loss.
Once again, Vagramov clinches a Bruin win! She bests Zeynel, 6-2, 7-6(4), on Court 6.

With Cal serving on Court 3 to begin doubles play, Altick and Goulak earned a break of serve. That proved to be all the duo needed, as it dispatched of Jasie Dunk and Julia Rosenqvist by a 6-4 score. At 2-1 on Court 2, Forbes and sophomore Taylor Johnson earned a break of their own against Anna Bright and Alexis Nelson. Another followed at 5-2 to seal the win.
Altick/Goulak and Forbes/Johnson were making their debuts as pairs.
The Bruins continued their success into singles play, where Altick picked up the first win of the day. Playing on Court 4, the Monroe, La. native took down Bright in a 6-2, 6-3 result. Altick previously beat Bright in a winner-take-all decision at Cal last season (Feb. 24, 2019).
No. 8 Forbes became the first UCLA player to 20 wins when she outlasted 50th-ranked Rosenqvist, 7-5, 6-4, on Court 2. Forbes fought back from deficits of 2-4 in the first set and 0-3 in the second to earn her eighth dual-match singles triumph without a loss.
Once again, an opportunity to clinch the overall decision presented itself to Vagramov on Court 6 and the Port Moody, BC, Canada native took it. She finished off Jessica Zeynel with a 6-2, 7-6(4) result that pushed her dual-match singles record to 7-0.
No. 12 Bolton was edged in a first-set tiebreaker by No. 13 Haley Giavara, but bounced back resoundingly for a 6-7(5), 6-2, 6-2 victory on the top court. Bolton put an exclamation point on her fifth win against a nationally-ranked opponent with an ace.
A top-30 matchup on Court 3 between No. 19 Hart and No. 28 Valentina Ivanov needed a third-set tiebreaker, which Hart toughed out for her 17th win against four losses. She holds a 5-0 mark in dual-match play after her 4-6, 6-2, 7-6(3) win.
Finally, No. 114 Goulak would not be denied on Court 5, where the Georgia transfer not only rebounded from a lost first-set tiebreaker, but a 2-5 deficit in the third set. Goulak made it a clean sweep with her 6-7(2), 6-2, 7-5 victory over Katerina Stloukalova.
The Bruins return to action Friday, Feb. 28, when they visit crosstown rival and No. 25/22 USC. First serve from Marks Stadium is scheduled for 1:30 p.m., PT.
