LOS ANGELES - Senior Rachel Garcia struck out 14 in eight innings, while also hitting a home run, with the second-ranked Bruins defeating No. 6 Arizona State on a walk-off double by junior Aaliyah Jordan to post a 2-1, eight-inning victory in the Pac-12 Conference opener at Easton Stadium on Friday.
Garcia (3-0) struck out the side in the third, fourth and fifth innings and two in the third, giving up a run, five hits and one walk. Offensively, the Bruins (16-1) had six hits from six different players.
The game was scoreless until the bottom of the fourth when Garcia took matters into her own hands, launching the second pitch of the inning out to left, her third of the season, to put the Bruins ahead.
Arizona State (17-3) evened the score with a solo homer in the top of the seventh, but UCLA would have the last say in the bottom of the eighth. Junior Briana Perez laid down a perfect bunt single to open the inning and came home on Jordan's double to right-center to give the Bruins a 2-1 victory.
The Bruins and the Sun Devils tangle again on Saturday with a 1 p.m. doubleheader. Both games will air on Pac-12 Networks.
