Bruins Wrap Homestand by Hosting UC Riverside
After playing four times in a 14-day span, the UCLA men's soccer team has just one contest on the schedule this week, hosting UC Riverside in the last of a five-game homestand. The contest will be streamed live through Pac-12 Plus, accessible via Pac-12.com/live or UCLABruins.com. Nick Koop will have the call on the live stream. Fans can also follow along with live stats on uclalivestats.com and live updates via the team Twitter account, @UCLAMSoccer

Home Heavy
This week concludes a stretch that saw UCLA play seven of its first eight games at home, and nine-of-10 if preseason exhibitions are included. The Bruins are scheduled to play just six regular season road games this year, including just one in non-conference competition (1-0 win at UC Irvine on Sept. 3).

The Week In Review
The Bruins started conference play on a high note last week, recording home wins over then-No. 14 Stanford and California. UCLA opened with a 2-0 triumph over the Cardinal on Thursday night, scoring a pair of second-half goals to end a 14-game winless streak against Stanford. Riley Ferch drew a penalty in the 50th minute that led to a game-winning PK goal from Yoni Sorokin, and Kevin Diaz iced it with a 79th minute marker, capitalizing on a Stanford miscommunication and pouncing on a loose ball for an empty-net score. The Bruins followed that up with a 2-1 triumph over Cal on Sunday, in a game that was not as close as the scoreline would indicate. UCLA went ahead in the first half on goals from Tucker Lepley and Tommy Silva - the latter an off-foot golaso from just above the box - but saw Cal make it a one-goal game in the 43rd minute. However, the Bruins dominated the second half, not allowing a single dangerous chance to the visitors. UCLA out-shot Cal 11-1 in the second half, and 16-4 overall for the game.

Quick Hits
  • UCLA enters the week having won five of its last six games
  • Over the last six games, the Bruins are outscoring their opponents 11-3 and outshooting them 64-38
  • Five of UCLA's first seven games have been decided by one goal
  • The Bruins are 5-0 when scoring first, and 0-2 when the opponent scores first
Garces Named UCLA Student-Athlete of the Week
Senior goalie Justin Garces was named the UCLA Student-Athlete of the Week on Tuesday, a first in his career. He's the first men's soccer player to be named the UCLA Student-Athlete of the Week since Milan Iloski in October 2019. Garces led the Bruins' defensive corps in wins over Stanford and Cal, allowing just one goal total over the two games as the Bruins started off conference play with a pair of regulation wins.

Slippery Silva
With four goals over his last six games, UCLA's Tommy Silva has moved atop the Pac-12 leaderboard for goalscoring. His marker against Cal broke a four-way tie for the top spot in the league, and he now paces the Pac-12 in both total goals and game-winning goals (3). In fact, only one other player in the country (UMBC's Taylor Calheira; 4) has more game-winners than Silva. The Tucson, Ariz. native has six goals and 16 points in 19 career games at UCLA.

The Series Against UC Riverside
The Bruins are 15-1-0 all-time against UC Riverside, winning the first 14 games of the series before the Highlanders broke the streak with a 2015 victory. This will be the second UCLA-UCR matchup under third-year head coach Ryan Jorden, with the Bruins recording a 3-1 win at home over the Highlanders during the 2019 season.

Last Time Out Against UCR
The Bruins notched a comfortable 3-1 win over UC Riverside in the last meeting between the two teams, on Oct. 1, 2019 at Wallis Annenberg Stadium. Then-freshmen Riley Ferch and Constantinos Michaelides both recorded their first collegiate goals in the win, and UCLA led 3-0 until a UCR goal at the 89:00 mark broke up the shutout. Ferch got the game-winning goal in just the fourth minute, picking up his own pass after it caromed off a trio of UCR defenders and blasting a shot from inside the 18. Michaelides made it 2-0 in the 49th minute, running down a ball on the left wing, evading a sliding defender, and coolly advancing onto net before slipping in a shot from the edge of the six. UCLA doubled up UC Riverside in the shots department, 10-5.

No Chance
UCLA has held its opponent to single-digit shots in every game so far of the fall 2021 campaign, and has allowed exactly two shots on goal in six consecutive games.

Checking It Off
UCLA's results over the weekend were notable on a number of fronts. The Bruins' wins over Stanford and California represented:
  • UCLA's first win over Stanford since 2013 (14-game winless streak, 10-game losing streak)
  • UCLA's first goal against Stanford since 2017
  • UCLA's first lead over Stanford since 2016
  • UCLA's first shutout of Stanford since 2013
  • The first time UCLA had a home sweep of the Bay Area Pac-12 schools since 2011
Holding Them Off
UCLA has allowed one goal or fewer in six consecutive games, a first for the program since 2016 (7; Aug. 26 to Sept. 23, 2016).

On The Mark
So far this season, the Bruins have shown themselves to be adept at getting their shot attempts on target, with 36 of the team's 70 shots going on frame. UCLA's 51% shot accuracy as a team paces the Pac-12 Conference and ranks ninth in the country.

In The Polls
UCLA appeared at No. 4 in this week's United Soccer Coaches Far West Region poll, a season-high and the third straight week the team has appeared in those rankings. UC Riverside is ranked No. 9 in that same poll.
