No. 21 UCLA Downs Stanford, 80-66, with Explosive First Half

STANFORD, Calif. – For the second game in a row, Jaime Jaquez Jr. scored a game-high 27 points to lead the No. 21-ranked UCLA men's basketball team to an 80-66 victory over Stanford at Maples Pavilion on Thursday evening.
Jaquez Jr. made his first four shot attempts and was 7-for-9 shooting in the first half for 15 points. Amari Bailey tied his highest scoring output of the season with 19 points. Tyger Campbell added 17 points and eight assists. Seven of Campbell's assists came in the first half alone.
UCLA (6-2, 1-0 Pac-12) led wire-to-wire thanks to a 17-0 surge in the first five minutes of the game, knocking down each of its first eight shots. Bailey helped spark the early run with back-to-back buckets coming off a 3-pointer and layup at the 15:40 mark. He drilled his second from beyond the arc six minutes later to give the Bruins a 23-point buffer for their largest lead of the night at 32-9.
The freshman from Chicago finished his 15-point first half with two dunks, the first of which was a putback over 7-1 Cardinal big man Maxime Raynaud.
Stanford (3-5, 0-1 Pac-12) was led by Spencer Jones' 18 points, fifteen of which came in the second half. Michael Jones allied 10 points, finishing the game 3-for-9 from the field.
UCLA went into halftime leading Stanford, 50-29.
Jones sparked the Cardinal offense with seven straight points out of the break to spur a 9-0 run, shrinking the Bruins' lead to 12 points at 50-38. UCLA was held scoreless for five minutes between 8:34 and 3:42. During that stretch, Jones nailed four more shots, including two 3-pointers to help bring Stanford within double digits, 66-58, with 4:30 remaining.
Adem Bona sunk two free throws, before Jaquez Jr. knocked down two free throws to put the game on ice with just over two minutes remaining. Jaquez Jr. converted three and-1 opportunities in the game. As a team, the Bruins shot 10-for-11 from the free throw line.
The Bruins finished Thursday's Pac-12 contest having shot 59 percent from the field. UCLA hit six of 14 shot attempts from 3-point range.
UCLA returns home to host Oregon in a Pac-12 contest on Sunday, Dec. 4. Game time is 2 p.m. (PT) in Pauley Pavilion presented by Wescom. The Bruins' contest will be televised by ESPN, with Dave Pasch and Bill Walton calling the action.
