
Men's Tennis Defeats No. 19 Pepperdine 4-3

LOS ANGELES โ The UCLA men's tennis team capped a successful opening weekend Saturday with a 4-3ย victory against No. 19 Pepperdine at Los Angeles Tennis Center.
For the second time in as many matches, Azuma Visaya clinched a win for the Bruins (2-0). Alexander Hoogmartens and Patrick Zahraj also prevailed for UCLA on the singles courts. Hoogmartens also helped secure the doubles point following an extended tiebreaker. Maxi Homberg, Tim Zeitvogel and Robert Shelton were victorious for the Waves (0-1). Shelton's win came by way of retirement, after the overall match was decided.

Each of the day's four tiebreakers, including three in completed matches, went to the Bruins.
Zahraj and Giacomo Revelli made a statement early in doubles play, taking six of seven games versus the No. 34 tandem of Zeitvogel and Daniel De Jonge. Pietro Fellin and Eric Hedigian answered for Pepperdine, doubling up Jeffrey Fradkin and Aadarsh Tripathi on Court 3.
With all eyes on Court 2, Hoogmartens and Timothy Li outlasted Homberg and Eero Vasa 10-8. The deciding point came with Pepperdine serving. The victory marked the first for Li in his dual-match career.
No. 83 Hoogmartens knocked off a top-50 opponent for the second straight dual match and third consecutive contest going back to tournament play. His latest win came against No. 31 De Jonge on the top court, 6-1, 6-3, and gave UCLA a 2-0 lead.
No. 94 Zeitvogel cut the Waves' deficit in half with a 6-3, 6-4 decision over No. 89 Revelli on Court 2. The Bruins answered, though, with Zahraj securing a 7-6(2), 6-4 victory against Eero Vasa on Court 3. Zahraj moved to a perfect 4-0 across singles and doubles contests.
Homberg charged back on Court 4, where he overcame Tripathi for a 4-6, 6-4, 6-1 result that made the score 3-2 in favor of UCLA. Then, with the Waves' Robert Shelton in possession of a 4-0 third-set lead on Court 6, Visaya took control on 5.
After holding serve for 2-2, Visaya never looked back on his way to a 7-6(2), 6-2 win. He also clinched Friday's 7-0 triumph over Hawai'i. Li then retired, giving Pepperdine its third point.
The Bruins now turn their focus to ITA Kickoff Weekend on the campus of USC. UCLA meets Memphis Jan. 28 at 11 a.m. PT and Vanderbilt or the host Trojans Jan. 29.
