MVB Wins Seventh Straight

January 27, 2023 | Men's Volleyball

The No. 2 UCLA men's volleyball team hit a season-high .507 while capturing its seventh straight win on the season in a non-league victory at CSUN on Friday night. Scores of the match were 25-18, 25-16, 26-24. Opposite Ido David picked up 16 kills, 2 aces and a block while hitting .636. Middle J.R. Norris IV was perfect on attack, putting down a season-high 9 kills on 9 swings. The Bruins will head East next week for matches with George Mason, host of this year's NCAA Championships, and then take on No. 13 Ohio State and No. 4 Penn State in the annual Pac-12/Big Ten Challenge at University Park, Pa.

UCLA broke a 3-3 tie behind the serve of David to begin set one. The Bruins tallied three straight points to go up 6-3. CSUN battled back to even the score at points 7 through 11. David then capped off a five-point run with an ace and a kill for a 16-11 advantage. The Matadors cut the margin to 18-14. Norris IV's kill made it 21-15. Merrick McHenry's spike positioned UCLA at set point and a Cooper Robinson kill delivered the 25-18 decision. UCLA hit .565 for the frame.

A David swing helped UCLA open set two with a 3-1 lead. Robinson's ace lifted the Bruins into a 7-4 edge. CSUN pulled to within two, at 11-9. A kill by Robinson and an ace from David extended the margin to 15-10. Ethan Champlin's swing put UCLA up 18-12. An Andrew Rowan ace made it 21-14. McHenry and Robinson teamed up for a block and a 23-15 lead. A couple of CSUN errors ended the set with UCLA up 25-16. The Bruins hit .368 for the set, with David connecting for six kills.

CSUN grabbed the early momentum in set three by taking leads at 1-3 and 2-5. McHenry's spike narrowed the gap to 8-9. Norris' kill leveled the score at 11-all. However, the Matadors tallied four of the next five points for a 12-15 advantage. UCLA sliced the deficit to one, at 15-16, following a David swing. The Matadors battled back to go up 17-20 and 19-22. Norris's kill helped ignite a Bruin rally. A Champlin kill, a CSUN error and a Norris ace evened the score at 23-all. David's 16th kill of the match pushed UCLA in front 24-23. After the hosts tied the score, McHenry's spike put the Bruins back into the lead. A CSUN error completed the Bruin comeback for a 26-24 victory. UCLA hit .556 for the set.

Andrew Rowan set the Bruins to the season-high hitting percentage with 39 set assists. Troy Gooch added six digs. Champlin finished with seven kills while McHenry chipped in with a team-high three block assists. Robinson totaled a career-best five kills to go with an ace and six digs.

The Bruins will return home on Feb. 9 to square off with No. 3-ranked Long Beach State at 8 p.m. in Pauley Pavilion presented by Wescom.
