Bruins Prevail in Five at Oregon State

November 22, 2023 | Women's Volleyball

CORVALLIS, Ore. โ€“ Senior Iman Ndiaye recorded a career-high 23 kills at a .368 hitting percentage in the UCLA women's volleyball team's 3-2 victory over Oregon State at Gill Coliseum Wednesday afternoon.
ย
Set scores were 14-25, 25-22, 27-25, 18-25 and 15-12.
ย
The Bruins (17-12, 9-10) hit 67 kills for a .315 hitting percentage as a team while the Beavers (11-18, 6-13) tallied 78 kills for .320. Sophomore outside hitter Cheridyn Leverette established a career high in kills with 19 for a .500 clip. Setter Audrey Pak recorded her second 50-plus assist outing of the season with 51 today.
ย
UCLA recorded 12 blocks compared to Oregon State's seven. Desiree Becker led the Bruins with five total blocks in the match. Becker also recorded her second-highest kill total of the season with an error-free 10 kills for .476.
ย
A 5-0 UCLA scoring run in set five gave the Bruins a four-point lead at 11-7. In that stretch, Ndiaye and Olson both tallied kills while Audrey Pak dialed up an ace, forcing a Beaver timeout. Ndiaye punctuated a long rally for a UCLA point at the 12-9 mark with a rocket that landed at the feet of Oregon State's libero. Leverette concluded the match with UCLA's final two points of the set, both coming on kills. Ndiaye totaled seven kills and just one error in the fifth.
ย
The Beavers overwhelmed the Bruins in sets two and four, recording 17 and 18 kills, respectively, each for plus-.500 hitting marks. Oregon State had 18 kills and no errors in the fourth set. Beavers outside hitter Mychael Vernon scored a match-high 24 kills.
ย
The two squads were knotted at 22-22 in the second set after a kill by Oregon State's Amanda Burns and block by Vernon and Aliyah McDonald. Following a timeout called by head coach Alfee Reft, Pak found Becker and Leverette for back-to-back kills, and a block assist by Ndiaye and Becker secured set point. The Bruins led by as much as six points at 21-15 in set two.
ย
UCLA trailed by 17-13 in the third set. Leading the comeback were kills by Leverette and Grayce Olson and a dump kill by Pak which pulled the Bruins within one at 17-16. A block by Becker and Pak gave UCLA its first lead of the set at 19-18. The two teams jockeyed back and forth with seven ties and five lead changes after that point. Lauren Rumel served an ace to bring set point to the line for Oregon State at 25-24. Once again, the Bruins strung together a 3-0 run to steal the frame. A solo block and kill by Leverette on the next two plays turned the tables and put set point at the line for UCLA. Pak and Lane, who was listed as a setter her first three years on the roster prior to moving to opposite hitter as a senior, met at the net for a block to secure set point.
ย
UCLA closes the regular season at crosstown rival No. 24 USC (18-11, 12-7) on Friday, Nov. 24 at the Galen Center at 7 p.m. (PT) on the Pac-12 Networks. Anne Marie Anderson and former UCLA setter Holly McPeak will be on the call.
