UCLA Beats No. 19 Stanford 3-1, Claims Share of Pac-12 Title

November 05, 2023 | Men's Soccer

STANFORD, Calif. – UCLA men's soccer clinched a share of the Pac-12 title on Sunday afternoon with a 3-1 win over No. 19 Stanford at Cagan Stadium. Jack Sarkos put the Bruins in front in the third minute, and Jose Contell scored a brace in the win.

With the win UCLA has clinched at least a share of the Pac-12 title for the first time since 2012, and have now won nine Pac-10/12 titles overall. The Bruins (8-3-5, 5-0-4 Pac-12) have also gone unbeaten in their first nine league games to start the 2023 season.

UCLA opened the game on the front foot, and were immediately rewarded. In the third minute Sarkos was played through on goal by Contell and Andre Ochoa, and scored with the first shot of the game to put the Bruins up 1-0.

Sam Joseph was busy in goal for UCLA in the opening 45 minutes. The sophomore keeper made a few top-notch saves, including one in the 38th minute to keep the Bruins on top 1-0. After a Stanford attacker made some space he fired the ball on frame. The ball then deflected on its way towards Joseph in net, and the UCLA keeper was able to get his foot to the ball and send it wide of his far post to keep the Cardinal off the board in the first half.

The second half started just like the first half did for the Bruins, with an early goal. This time Contell went from provider to finisher as he headed home a perfect ball from Tommy Silva to put UCLA up 2-0 in the 48th minute. The assist was Silva's team-leading eighth of the season.

With UCLA already up 2-0, the Bruins continued to hunt for a third goal, and it came just five minutes later in the 53rd minute. Contell, with already a goal and assist to his name, secured a brace for the first time in his collegiate career. The Valencia, Spain native picked up a loose ball just outside the 18-yard box. He dribbled past one defender and then slotted the ball back across goal to the far post and into the net to give UCLA a 3-0 lead.

Stanford would tack on a goal late in the 79th minute, but the Bruins were able to conformably see out the final few minutes and clinched a share of the Pac-12 title as the final whistle blew.

The Bruins can clinch the Pac-12 title outright with a draw or win in their regular season finale at San Diego State on Friday, November 10. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. PT from the SDSU Sports Deck.
