MVB Opens MPSF Play with Sweep

The No. 2 UCLA men's volleyball team opened Mountain Pacific Sports Federation (MPSF) play with a straight-set win over No. 8 BYU on Friday night in Pauley Pavilion presented by Wescom. Scores of the contest were 25-20, 25-22, 25-18. Ido David and Ethan Champlin led a balanced Bruin attack with 11 kills apiece while Alex Knight added 10 kills on an .833 attack percentage. UCLA, which hit .431 as a team for the match, is now 12-1, 1-0 on the season, while the Cougars fell to 8-3, 0-1.
UCLA started slow in set one and BYU moved out to a 5-7 advantage. The visitors grew the margin to 7-12, forcing a Bruin timeout. A pair of Guy Genis swings out of the middle narrowed the deficit to 12-15. Genis' block and a kill from Champlin tied the score at 16-all. Back-to-back aces from Genis pushed the Bruins in front 19-17. David's spike gave UCLA its largest lead of the set, at 22-18. Another Champlin swing put UCLA up 24-20. David and Genis combined for a block to end the set at 25-20. UCLA hit .500 for the frame.
In set two, UCLA fell behind 5-10 in the early going. Two straight kills from Knight closed the gap to 8-11. A pair of BYU errors, followed by a Champlin kill, left the Bruins down by one, at 17-18. A Knight kill and a Cougar error leveled the score at 19-all. With the score even at 20-all, Knight recorded a block solo and David added a kill for a 22-20 lead. After a BYU timeout, Knight registered his seventh kill of the frame for a 23-20 edge. A Bruin block and a Cougar error ended the set for a 25-22 win.
The Bruins surged to a 7-4 margin in set three. The score was then even at points 7, 8 and 9. A Champlin kill, a Andrew Rowan/Genis block and a David ace put the Bruins up 12-9. The Cougars closed to 14-13, but UCLA answered with a Champlin kill and a Merrick McHenry/David block to go back up by three. McHenry's ace made it 19-15. A Champlin/Genis block lifted the Bruins to set point. A Cougar service error ended the set at 25-18.
Genis finished with a team-high five blocks on the night. Rowan finished with 37 set assists on the night. Troy Gooch compiled three digs. UCLA won the service line five aces to two and outblocked the visitors 8.0 to 6.0. The same two teams will square off on Saturday evening at 5 p.m. on Collins Court in the John Wooden Center.
