No. 3 UCLA Falls to No. 4 California, 9-7

IRVINE, Calif.ย โ No. 3 UCLA (12-3) fell to No. 4 California (12-3) in the third-place game of the Barbara Kalbus Invitational at UC Irvine on Sunday, 9-7.
A total of four Bruins got into the scoring column in the loss, including a team-high three goals from freshman Anna Pearson.
Redshirt senior Georgia Phillips got the start in the cage and went the distance, recording a season-high 12 saves and added one assist and one steal while allowing nine goals.

The Golden Bears jumped out to a 3-1 lead at the end of the first period. Pearsonย scored the only goal for the Bruins in the first periodย (3:42).
California also won the second period, 3-2, to build a 6-3 lead at halftime. Graduate student Ava Johnson scored to cut Cal's lead to 4-2 (4:01) and Pearson netted her second of the game on a power play (1:17) to make it 5-3. The Golden Bears scored with 0:18 left in the quarter to end the scoring in the first half.
The Bruins won the third quarter, 4-2, to pull to within one goal at 8-7 heading into the fourth. Graduate student Val Ayala scored a power play goal off a feed from sophomore Emma Lineback (7:24) to open the scoring. After two goals by Cal put the Golden Bears up 8-4, the Bruins answered with a 3-0 scoring run. Johnson scored her second of the game (3:21) and Pearson completed her hat trick on a power play (1:55) with an assist going to freshman Lily Gess. Then Gessย scored her first of the game off a feed from freshman Sienna Green (0:53) to end the scoring in the period.
California would tack on an insurance goal in the fourth quarter and hold the Bruins scoreless in the fourth.
NOTES: Lineback saw her streak of 14 consecutive games with a goal come to an end today. She was the only Bruin to have scored in every game this season. She did pick up two assists and one steal against the Golden Bears.
The Bruins have a week off and will return to action and MPSF play when they head to No. 1 Stanford on Saturday, Mar. 11 at 1:00 p.m. PT.
