STANFORD, Calif. – No. 4 UCLA (12-4, 1-1 MPSF) fell at No. 1 Stanford (14-0, 2-0 MPSF) on Saturday afternoon at Avery Aquatic Center, 18-13.

Offensively, the Bruins were solid, scoring the most goals on the Cardinal since the USC Trojans defeated Stanford 13-10 on Feb. 24, 2013, in Irvine, Calif. But defensively, the Bruins gave up 18 goals, which included three penalty conversions and five power play goals. A total of eight Bruins got into the scoring column in the loss, including a team-high three goals from graduate student Ava Johnson.

Redshirt senior Georgia Phillips got the start in the cage and went the distance, recording six saves and adding one steal while allowing 18 goals.

The Bruin youngsters kept UCLA in the game in the first quarter with sophomore Emma Lineback and freshman Anna Pearson and Taylor Smith each scoring a goal as the Bruins trailed 4-3 at the end of the first period.

UCLA turned the tables in the second period and outscored the Cardinal 4-3 to tie things up at 7-7 at the break. Johnson scored twice in the period while Smith scored her second goal and freshman Sienna Green got in on the scoring in the second quarter.

The Bruins scored five goals in the third with Lineback netting her second, senior Hannah Palmer and graduate student Val Ayala scoring once and Johnson completing her hat trick. Then freshman Genoa Rossi struck the back of the net to give UCLA a 12-10 lead with 2:21 remaining. But the Cardinal struck twice more to tie the game at 12-12 heading into the fourth

Stanford would outscore the Bruins 6-1 in the fourth period to provide the 18-13 final. Ayala added her second goal (6:04) to tie the game at 13-13, but the Bruins would be shut out the rest of the way.

The Bruins return to action and MPSF play tomorrow when they head to No. 20 San Jose State on Sunday, Mar. 12 at 1:00 p.m. PT.
