The No. 2 UCLA men's volleyball team (19-2) dropped a four-set decision against top-ranked Hawai'i (17-1) in the final match of the OUTRIGGER Hotels Invitational on Saturday night in Honolulu, Hawai'i before a crowd of over 10,000 fans. Scores of the match were 27-29, 25-21, 22-25, 26-28. Ido David led four Bruins in double-digits kills with a season-high tying 21. Zach Rama came off the bench to add 12. Merrick McHenry supplied 11 kills with Ethan Champlin chipping in with 10. Hawai'i outhit the Bruins .273 to .268 on the night.
UCLA went down 6-9 in set one before battling back to even the score at 13-all following a series of errors. A block by Guy Genis put UCLA in front 16-14. Two kills from Champlin and one from McHenry grew the margin to 19-15. Another Champlin kill made it 20-18 and a UH error pushed the gap to 23-20. The Rainbow Warriors called timeout and then returned to the court to score four straight to go up 23-24. The Bruins then fought off four set points before Hawai'i capitalized on a UCLA service error and a kill to take the frame 27-29.
UCLA jumped out to an 8-4 lead in set two after back-to-back kills by Ido David. The lead was 12-7 following a Champlin spike. Three straight from UH made it a two-point gap. McHenry sparked the Bruins with a couple of kills up the margin to 15-10. After UH sliced the deficit to 15-13, a kill from Alex Knight and an ace from McHenry pushed the Bruin into a 17-13 lead. Hawai'i closed to 22-20. David's kill put UCLA up by three and Knight's swing made it 24-21. A block by Champlin / McHenry and Andrew Rowan ended the set at 25-21.
Hawai'i grabbed a 2-7 lead to begin set three behind a strong service game. Kills by McHenry and David sliced the deficit to 7-11. A David swing made it 13-15. With UH up 16-20, the Bruins ran off four straight points behind the serve of McHenry to level the score at 20-all. However, the next three points went to the home team on a couple of Bruin errors and a net call. David's kill saved a set point and cut the gap to 22-24, but UH ended the frame on a kill for a 22-25 win.
UCLA opened up a 7-3 lead in set four after back-to-back aces from Rowan. It marked the 10th straight match for the freshman setter with at least one ace. UH closed to 10-9, but the Bruins responded with four of the next five points to go up 14-10. The Rainbow Warriors then narrowed the deficit to 17-16 on a block. McHenry's swing kept UCLA in front at 20-18. David's kill made it 22-20. A Rama swing handed UCLA a 23-21 advantage, but a service error and a UH kill evened the score. Another Rama kill gave UCLA set point at 24-23, but UH answered with a kill. The teams traded service errors to leave the score tied at 25. Hawai'i went up 25-26 on a kill, but David's 21st kill of the evening saved a match point. A Bruin attack error and a UH block secured the win for the home team at 26-28. Rama totaled nine kills on 12 swings and David added six kills on 11 swings in the set but Hawai'i countered by hitting .500 for the frame.
