MVB Aces Stanford in Saturday Sweep

The No. 3 UCLA men's volleyball team fired off 11 aces in a sweep of No. 10 Stanford in a Mountain Pacific Sports Federation (MPSF) match played on Saturday evening at Stanford. Scores of the match were 25-18, 25-21, 25-20.
 
The Bruins improved to 6-0 in the MPSF with the win and to 21-2 overall on the season. Ido David led the Bruins with 10 kills and shared ace-high honors with Ethan Champlin, as both players finished with three. It marked the sixth match this season in which the Bruins had double-digits from the service line. Guy Genis provided eight blocks for the second straight night as UCLA controlled the nets 10.0 to 3.0. The Bruins will take next week off for Spring Quarter exams before returning to the court for a showdown in Phoenix with No. 5-ranked Grand Canyon which currently sits in second-place in the league standings.
 
UCLA fell behind 4-8 in set one. A Genis block solo and a Genis / Champlin block narrowed the deficit to 8-9. Alex Knight followed up with an ace to tie the score at 9-all. An Andrew Rowan ace shot UCLA into a 13-11 lead. Champlin's pair of aces helped up the margin to 18-12. David's ace made it 21-14. Another couple of blocks by Genis put UCLA in front 23-16. Champlin's spike pushed the Bruins to set point, at 24-18. A Cardinal setting error provided the decisive point of the set for a 25-18 win.
 
A flurry of early aces by David left UCLA with a 7-3 lead early in the second set. Champlin's kill made it 9-5. A Knight / Genis/ David block put UCLA up 14-9. Rowan's kill and ace had the Bruins up 20-14. A series of service errors left UCLA up 23-18. The Cardinal closed to 23-20 following a couple of Bruin attack errors. Stanford's service error gave UCLA set point, at 24-20. Rowan finished off the frame with a block solo for a 25-21 win.
 
The Bruins ran out to a 6-3 lead to begin set three. The Cardinal rallied to tie the score at 9-all. David's kill put UCLA back in front 12-11. A Rowan / Genis / Knight block made it 16-13. Merrick McHenry's ace resulted in a 21-16 lead. Knight's smash made it 22-18. Kills by David and Knight resulted in a 23-20 lead. Knight's kill produced set point, at 24-20. Coleman McDonough delivered an ace to end the frame, at 25-20.
 
After the exam break, the Bruins will travel to Grand Canyon (20-1, 5-1) for a pair of MPSF matches on Mar. 31 and April 1. UCLA's next home contest is on Thursday, Apr. 6 against USC in Pauley Pavilion presented by Wescom.
