MVB Sweeps Past Loyola

January 13, 2024 | Men's Volleyball

The top-ranked UCLA men's volleyball team (4-0) won its 16th straight match with a sweep in a non-league contest at No. 10-ranked Loyola-Chicago (1-5) on Saturday night before a sold-out crowd. Scores of the match were 25-20, 25-19, 25-22. The win streak matches UCLA's longest since it won the last 14 matches of 2006 and the first two of the 2007 campaign.

Ido David and Cooper Robinson led the attack for UCLA with 12 and 10 kills, respectively. It was a career-high total in kills for Robinson who also had a personal-best five blocks. David added four blocks and a team-high seven digs. Merrick McHenry and Ethan Champlin each contributed three aces. UCLA out blocked the Ramblers 12.0 to 3.5 and out aced LUC 9 to 6. The Bruins hit .389 while Loyola was held to a .128 attack percentage.

Loyola used three early aces to surge to a 4-8 advantage to begin set one. Back-to-back kills from David and Champlin pulled UCLA even at 9-all. Loyola went back in front 10-12 only to see the Bruins register the next three points to go up 13-12. With UCLA ahead 16-15, Robinson recorded three aces on his next four serves to open up a 19-15 margin. The Ramblers closed to 22-20, but two LUC errors and Champlin's ace ended the set at 25-20.

The Ramblers opened up another early lead in set two with UCLA pulling even at 9-all on a Champlin ace. Andrew Rowan's kill put UCLA ahead 14-12. Two straight swings by Champlin found the floor for a 16-14 advantage. Loyola then evened the score at 17-all. The Bruins tallied the next three points for a 20-17 lead with another Champlin ace finishing off the run. A McHenry kill and ace put UCLA in front 22-19. A Robinson kill and another McHenry ace earned the Bruins the set at 25-19.

Loyola grabbed the early lead in the third set before the Bruins leveled the score at 9-each. The score was then tied at points 10 through 14. Kills by David and Robinson helped UCLA move out to a 18-15 edge. Loyola battled back to tie the score at 21-all. Consecutive blocks by Guy Genis and Robinson broke the tie. Robinson and then David followed with kills to finish the set at 25-21.

UCLA will stay on the road next week for the First Point Collegiate Challenge in Austin, Texas to play No. 5 Ohio State (Friday) and No. 6 Penn State (Saturday).
