October 16, 2024 | Men's Golf
LOS ANGELES – The UCLA men's golf team returns to action this Friday, competing at the 2024 Golf Club of Georgia Tech Collegiate Invitational, which runs from Friday, Oct. 18 through Sunday, Oct. 20.
The three-day, 54-hole stroke play tournament will include 14 teams at The Golf Club of Georgia in Alpharetta, Ga. The Bruins will be playing at the Lakeside Course (par 72, 7,092 yards). The field of participants has eight teams that competed in the 2024 NCAA Championship (six of which finished in the top 15). Eight teams are currently ranked among the top 25 of the Bushnell/Golfweek Coaches' Poll. Live scoring will be available via the Scoreboard site (powered by Clippd).
The first groups will begin at 9 a.m. (ET) on Friday. For the second and third rounds (Saturday and Sunday), the first groups will begin at 8:30 a.m. (ET). Pairings and tee times are pre-determined for Friday and Saturday, with the final round on Sunday to be based on the 36-hole score.
"After a tough final round at Notre Dame, we're excited that we have a fairly quick turnaround here," UCLA head coach Armen Kirakossian said. "We'll be back on the road, heading to Georgia Tech's event at the Golf Club at Georgia. This is one that our guys always looking forward to. It's a great tournament, facing a very strong field of some of the best teams from around the country. We'll get to see how we stack up as a team and as a program against some of the best, on a difficult golf course in a different time zone on different grasses. This should challenge us. But we are looking forward to having the opportunity to see if we can hold up to that challenge."
UCLA's starting lineup in Alpharetta, Ga., will feature two seniors (Pablo Ereño, Omar Morales), one junior (Kyle An), one sophomore (Luke Powell) and one freshman (Baylor Larrabee). The upcoming tournament will mark the Bruins' third event of the fall season.
"I'm excited about the team and our guys have been working hard," Kirakossian said. "We had a pretty intense qualifier for the final three spots, having our guys earn their way on this trip. It's been very competitive at home, and that bodes well for success at the tournament. I liked the way that we came out of the blocks last week. We got off to a hotter start. We got ourselves in contention at Notre Dame and, unfortunately, we had a poor final round. So we're looking to get off to that same type of a hot start this week, and hopefully our guys will learn from that experience last week and will close out better than we did before."
Last fall, Omar Morales won the second medal of his collegiate career with a co-championship at the Golf Club of Georgia Collegiate Invitational (scoring 11-under par). Morales became the third UCLA golfer to have medaled at the Golf Club of Georgia Collegiate, joining Eddy Lai (2019) and Erik Flores (2009).
