UCLA Downs Northwestern in Straight Sets

October 20, 2024 | Women's Volleyball

EVANSTON, Ill. – UCLA got back in the win column with its first-ever Big Ten Conference sweep, taking down Northwestern in straight sets on Sunday morning inside Welsh-Ryan Arena.

Set scores were 28-26, 28-26, and 25-10.

The Bruins (9-8, 3-5) posted a team hitting percentage of .311 in the win over the Wildcats (4-12, 2-6), its best mark in Big Ten action this season.

Junior Grayce Olson headlined the effort with her first career double-double, racking up 13 kills at a .458 clip while snuffing out a career-high 12 digs. She got involved in three blocks on the defensive end to finish with 14.5 points on the day.

Reaching double-digit kills for the 16th consecutive match with a game-high 14 kills was junior Cheridyn Leverette. Graduate Leilani Dodson collected 10 kills (.556) and three blocks against her former team.

Graduate Anna Dodson and freshman Kiki Horne contributed seven kills apiece. Libero Peyton Dueck recorded a team-high 16 digs and setter Audrey Pak handed out 43 assists.

The Bruins connected on three consecutive swings to spark a 6-1 scoring run to open the contest. A. Dodson's back-to-back kills further extended UCLA's lead, but Northwestern responded by winning six straight points to eventually earn its first lead. Kiki Horne's crucial kill secured the side out for UCLA. The two teams traded blows in a set that went to deuce. Despite UCLA squandering two set points and Northwestern failing to capitalize on one of its own, the momentum shifted back to the Bruins after L. Dodson and Horne teamed up for a pivotal block to clinch a 28-26 victory for UCLA in the first set.

UCLA's set two win was headlined by Olson's eight kills, including two in the closing stages. The Wildcats managed an early lead until Joy Umeh's involvement helped change the tide when she dealt an ace to give the Bruins their first lead of the frame. Olson knocked down two straight kills to make it 19-17 in favor of UCLA, but Northwestern surged ahead to force a pair of set points. The Bruins turned to their leading point-scorer, Leverette, to deliver two important kills before L. Dodson and Olson provided the finishing touches with another set-clinching block to complete the Bruins' comeback effort in the second frame.

UCLA never trailed in the final set, racing to a 5-1 advantage after A. Dodson connected on two straight swings. L. Dodson knocked down five consecutive kills, finding rhythm with Pak on the offensive end. The Bruins hit .500 in the third set and earned its largest margin of victory in a set this season, 25-10.
UCLA makes its return for the beginning of three-game homestand at Pauley Pavilion presented by Wescom on Oct. 24 at 6 p.m. when it hosts No. 3 Penn State. The match will be available for viewing on Big Ten Network.
