No. 19 UCLA Draws at No. 6 Maryland, 1-1

October 21, 2024 | Men's Soccer

COLLEGE PARK, Md. – The No. 19 UCLA men's soccer team drew at No. 6 Maryland 1-1 at Ludwig Field on Monday night. Tamir Ratoviz tallied the equalizer for the Bruins in the 56th minute to earn a point on the road.

Ratoviz, a freshman from Los Angeles, scored his second goal of the season on Monday night. Wyatt Nelson, making his eight start of the season, made two saves in goal for UCLA.

The game started brightly as both teams searched early for an opener. Edrey Caceres had a great chance in the sixth minute for the Bruins, but his shot was well-saved by the Maryland keeper and the game stayed at 0-0.

Jacob Diaz, making his second start of the season, also had a great look at goal in the 14th minute, but Maryland's keeper pushed his shot over the bar and out for a corner to preserve the 0-0 scoreline.

Just over ten minutes later, in the 25th minute of the game, Maryland opened the scoring. Sadam Masereka broke down the right wing and took the ball into the 18-yard box before hitting the ball underneath Nelson and putting the Terrapins up 1-0.

Neither team would threaten in the remaining 20 minutes of the half and Maryland took a 1-0 lead into the halftime break.

The Bruins pushed for an equalizer early in the half, and their pressure paid off in the 56th minute. Ratoviz, who was a halftime substitute found the net after some nice play on both wings by Nicholas Cavallo and Philip Naef.  Cavallo picked a cross-field ball to Naef, who hit it first time on the ground towards Ratoviz. The LAFC product took a touch to gather the ball before slotting his shot past the Maryland keeper, tying the game at 1-1

UCLA looked for a winning goal in the final minutes, and almost found it multiple times. Nicholas Cavallo came closest for the Bruins in the 83rd minute. The graduate defender dribbled the ball the length of the field before laying it off to Jose Contell, who hit it first time back towards Cavallo who centered the ball back on goal, but the Maryland keeper got both hands to it to keep the game tied at 1-1.

Up Next: No. 19 UCLA returns to Wallis Annenberg Stadium on Friday to host Indiana. Kickoff is set for 7:30 pm PT, with the game being broadcast on the Big Ten Network.
