UCLA Beats Maryland in Big Ten Quarterfinals, 6-0

November 07, 2024 | Men's Soccer

BRIDGEVIEW, Ill. – The No. 6 seeded UCLA's men's soccer program took down the No. 3 seed Maryland 6-0 in the quarterfinal round of the Big Ten Men's Soccer Tournament. Phillip Naef led the Bruins with a goal and four assists on the night.

Naef's four assists on the afternoon tie a program record for most assists in a single game. The three other Bruins who have recorded four assists in a single game include Zak Ibsen, Michael Stephens, and  Jackson Yueill.

The Bruins tallied six goals on the night, their most in a game since 2016. Jose Contell and Naef scored in the first half, while Andre Ochoa, Edrey Caceres, Sveinn Hauksson and Artem Vovk all tallied goals in the second half.

With the win head coach Ryan Jorden also earned his 150th career win.

UCLA moves on to the semifinal round and will take on the No. 7 seed Michigan on Sunday. The Wolverines beat the No. 2 seed Indiana 1-0 earlier on in the day.

The Bruins were on the front foot throughout the game, but did not find the breakthrough until the 34th minute when Contell put the Bruins in front. Pablo Greenlee took a throw in near the corner flag, which found Naef. Naef then dribbled around a defender and found Contell who took a touch and then smashed the ball past the keeper, putting UCLA up 1-0.

Naef tallied his first career goal 11 minutes later with 56 seconds left in the half. The Copenhagen, Denmark, native was played through on goal after Tamir Ratoviz dribbled through midfield and found Nico Cavallo. Cavallo then squared the ball across the face of goal to Naef who was waiting to tap it in at the back post, giving UCLA a 2-0 heading into halftime.

UCLA continued to dominate after the halftime break. Seven minutes after the half began Ochoa added the third goal of the afternoon.  Naef was a terror down the right flank again on the goal and beat his defender before sending the ball across the box towards Ochoa who was waiting at the penalty spot. Ochoa took it first time and put the ball in the back of the net, and UCLA led 3-0 in the 53rd minute.

Caceres earned UCLA's fourth of the afternoon in the 55th minute. The graduate transfer latched onto a ball played across goal by Nikolai Rojel, who was played through on goal by Naef. Rojel brought the ball down, and then played a pass to Caceres who slotted it past the keeper to put UCLA up 4-0.

Twelve minutes later the Bruins scored a fifth. Hauksson came off the bench and got on the scoresheet with a tidy finish. Ratoviz made another great run through midfield and found Hauksson. Hauksson took a touch to settle the ball and let his defender run by before sending his shot into the bottom right corner of the net, giving UCLA a 5-0 advantage.

Freshman Artem Vovk scored the sixth of the night for the Bruins. Vovk brought down a ball that was bouncing in the box in the 76th minute to put UCLA in front by six goals, 6-0.

Up Next: UCLA, the No. 6 seed in the Big Ten Tournament, will play No. 7 Michigan in the semifinal round on Sunday, November 11. Kickoff is set for noon PT/2 pm CT from SeatGeek Stadium in Bridgeview, Illinois.
