February 10, 2024 | Softball
ย
Seven Bruins (2-2) recorded a hit in UCLA's game one victory over the Toreros (0-4). UCLA built up an early 7-0 lead across the first three innings.
ย
Sophomore catcher Alexis Ramirez, who has hit safely in all four games to open the season, recorded the Bruins' first base hit of the day with a single to left field in the bottom of the first. Ramirez came around to score UCLA's first run on a hard-hit double by Jordan Woolery which popped out of a ranging San Diego center fielder's glove at the warning track.
ย
UCLA added a four spot in the bottom of the second. Graduate Jadelyn Allchin recorded the first home run of her career on an opposite field, two-run shot to left. A double by Thessa Malau'ulu down the right field line that tipped off the San Diego first baseman's leather put two in scoring position for Savannah Pola. Pola rolled one over to shortstop, giving Seneca Curo enough time to sprint home. A single by Maya Brady into right field ย pushed across the final run of the inning.
ย
Sharlize Palacios recorded the third triple of her career in the bottom of the third to score pinch runner Lauren Hatch from first base. After being substituted in to pinch run for Palacios, Liesl Osteen scored the Bruins' seventh run of the day on a groundout by Curo to shortstop.
ย
Freshman pitcher Kaitlyn Terry kept the Toreros off the scoreboard and did not let a runner into scoring position for the first three innings. The left-hander allowed her first two runs of the game on a homer to left field in the fourth inning.
ย
San Diego began another rally in the top of the seventh. Torero Emma Giaime recorded a two-run single to left field to make it 7-5, and a sacrifice fly by the next batter made it a one-run game and brought the tying run to the plate with two outs.
ย
The Shelly Carlin UCLA Head Softball Coach Kelly Inouye-Perez brought Taylor Tinsley in to secure the final out. Tinsley struck out her batter on four pitches. She now has two saves to begin the season.
ย
Texas scored runs in all five innings of its victory over UCLA, which included two Longhorn grand slams. The Bruins' pitchers walked 10 batters. Maya Brady went 2-for-2 with two singles.
ย
UCLA closes its first weekend of the 2024 season tomorrow afternoon versus No. 9 Oklahoma State at 1 p.m. (PT) at Easton Stadium. The game will be nationally televised with Beth Mowins (play-by-play) and Michele Smith (analyst) on the call.
