No. 9 UCLA Sweeps Arizona Schools

February 11, 2024 | Women's Basketball

LOS ANGELES – No. 9 UCLA (19-4, 8-4 Pac-12) dominated Arizona State with the help of a commanding second half performance. The victory highlighted UCLA's National Girls and Women in Sports Game this Sunday at Pauley Pavilion presented by Wescom.

Sophomore Lauren Betts led her team to a comfortable victory against Arizona State (10-14, 2-10 Pac-12) with 18 points. Betts went 9-10, with the Sun Devils unable to shut her down inside the paint. Sophomore Christeen Iwuala matched her season-high of 10 points with an electrifying second half performance. The Texas native accumulated a pair of and-one plays, igniting and elevating the Bruins' offensive performance.

The depth of the UCLA bench was on full display with eight players tallying points for the squad.  Of the players who saw action, five pocketed double digits: Betts, Iwuala, Charisma Osborne (12 PTS), Kiki Rice (12 PTS) and Londynn Jones (10 PTS). On the other side of the ball, UCLA forced 16 turnovers.

Sun Devils' guard Jalyn Brown proved the Bruins biggest threat, finding 25 points throughout the matchup. UCLA successfully shut Brown down in the second quarter, limiting her to three points. Despite Brown's strong performance, the sophomore was unable to match the expansiveness and versatility of the Bruin squad.

The Bruins opened the game with strong offensive play. Seven offensive rebounds by UCLA provided a strong performance in the paint. Center Lauren Betts' explosive start opened the first quarter; the center tallied, going 3-for-3 in the first. The Bruins entered the second quarter with a 17-10 lead.

A series of turnovers shortened the Bruins lead in the second quarter, only scoring two points throughout the first five minutes of play.  However, UCLA's strong defensive play denied the Sun Devils a chance at the lead.

Osborne broke the dry spell pulling up for a jumper with three minutes remaining. Fellow graduate student Camryn Brown continued the momentum with two steals, followed by an assist and layup of her own. The Bruins first half performance was closed with a crowd-pleasing and-one by Iwuala.

The fired-up Bruin squad opened the second half with a seven-point run, provoking a Sun Devils timeout. The scoring streak was paired with a strong block by Betts and two Bruin steals. Betts remained unstoppable in the paint, dropping 10 points in the third quarter alone. Coming off of a double-double in her previous game, Gabriela Jaquez found three assists and four points. The Bruins entered the last quarter of play with a 20-point lead, 51-31.

Sophomore Londynn Jones started UCLA's last quarter of play with an impressive step-back 3-pointer, laying the foundation for an eight-point scoring streak.

Solidifying the Bruins dominance in the paint, sophomore Iwuala followed Betts with a 7-point fourth period performance. A team effort widened the Bruins lead to 78-45.

On the Road Again: at the Oregon schools
The Bruins travel north next Friday to take on No. 17 Oregon State. The game will be streaming on the Pac-12 Network, with tip-off at 7:00 p.m. PT. UCLA heads to Eugene, Ore., on Sunday, Feb. 18, to take on the Oregon Ducks at 2 p.m. PT.
