No. 9/10 UCLA Bounces Back with Win Over Arizona, 66-58

LOS ANGELES – No. 9/10 UCLA defeated Arizona on Friday evening's Black Excellence Game at Pauley Pavilion presented by Wescom.
UCLA sophomore Gabriela Jaquez led the field with 21 points and 15 rebounds, earning her third double-double of the season. The Camarillo, Calif., native notched a new career-high on the boards. Jaquez's double-double was paired with a season-high six assists. Graduate guard Charisma Osborne tied the game-high assist total with six of her own, adding eight points and five rebounds to the stat sheet.
Sophomore Kiki Rice garnered 20 points to aid the Bruins in their momentum-building victory. Rice was a flamethrower on the court; the point guard shot 9-of-12 from the field, including a perfect 2-for-2 performance from distance.
UCLA (18-4, 7-4 Pac-12) returns to the win column after downing the Wildcats (12-11, 4-7 Pac-12) at home. Sophomore Lauren Betts (6 PTS, 9 REB, 4 BLK) returned to action, playing 27 minutes after missing the previous four matchups due to undisclosed medical reasons.
Opening with fast-paced offensive play and aggressive defense, the Wildcats kept the Bruins on their toes the first quarter. Rice led the field with 10 points, pancaking the first period with two explosive layups. UCLA entered the second quarter with a four-point lead on the Wildcats, 18-14.
The second quarter proved overwhelmingly similar to the first. UCLA accumulated eight turnovers throughout the first half, splitting them evenly between the quarters. Despite finding itself ahead early on in the second quarter, Arizona could not regain the upper hand. Jaquez aided the Bruins' lead with six points of her own, as well as accumulated nine rebounds throughout the first half. The sophomore guard pulled down six offensive and three defensive boards before the break. UCLA led 31-28 at the halftime buzzer.
The Bruins widened the gap in the third quarter with the Wildcats going scoreless for five minutes. Jaquez sank two free throws, solidifying her anticipated double-double. The sophomore ended the third quarter leading the field with five assists.
After an opening layup by Rice, the fourth quarter remained scoreless for three minutes with both teams failing to find the basket. The Bruins dry spell was ended with a layup by Christeen Iwuala, who earned her second-consecutive, second-career start. The sophomore's layup opened the floodgates with the Bruins sinking 14 more points to secure the win.
Women's Olympic Qualifying Tournament
In Brazil, Bruin teammates Lina Sontag and Angela Dugalić battled it out at Olympic Qualifiers. Sontag's German squad defeated her Serbian teammate, 73-66. The two go their separate ways as they represent their nations for the remainder of the Qualifiers.
