Morales, Powell Named to Ben Hogan Award Watch List
Omar Morales and Luke Powell were named to the 40-player Ben Hogan Award Watch List on Feb. 9. The most prestigious award in men's college golf, The Ben Hogan Award is presented annually to the top collegiate golfer based on all collegiate, amateur and professional events.
UCLA is one of seven programs with multiple student-athletes selected to the Watch List. Morales and Powell are UCLA's first Watch List selections since Jonathan Garrick who was honored his senior season in 2015-16.
Bruins at a Glimpse
Powell, a freshman from Laguna Niguel, leads UCLA with a 69.8 scoring average. Morales is right behind Powell with a 70.0 scoring average. The duo is tied for the team lead with four top-10 finishes, 16 rounds under par and one win apiece.
Morales has shot under par in 16 of his last 18 collegiate stroke play rounds dating back to early October at the Hamptons Intercollegiate. Morales claimed co-medalist honors at the Golf Club of Georgia Collegiate on Oct. 15 with a score of 11-under (68-68-69).
Powell opened his UCLA career with four top-10 placements in his first five tournaments. Powell secured his first collegiate medal in just his second tournament at the Hamptons Intercollegiate with a score of 17-under (64-67-68) which is the second lowest 54-hole score in relation to par in program history.
Ereño has been the Bruins' top finisher in their last two tournaments with back-to-back top-10s at The Prestige (t-7th; -7) and the Pauma Valley Invitational (t-8th; -3). The Spaniard entered Spring 2023 with two top-10 marks under his belt in his first two collegiate seasons.
Morales' Competitions Internationally and on TOUR
Morales has competed in amateur and professional events during his junior season. Most recently, Morales competed in his home country at the Mexico Open at Vidanta from Feb. 22-25 where he missed the cut by one stroke at 1-under (70-71). Morales made his first PGA TOUR appearance at the 2023 Mexico Open the year prior.
From Jan. 18-21, Morales competed at the Latin America Amateur Championships in Panama where he finished runner-up (-8) with round scores of 69-69-65-69.
Over Summer 2023, Morales competed in his first major championship event at the 123rd U.S. Open at L.A. Country Club from June 15-18. Morales hit the opening tee shot of the tournament before missing the cut after two rounds.
Jake Knapp Wins First Career PGA TOUR Event
Rookie Jake Knapp, who competed at UCLA from 2012-15, won his first PGA TOUR event at the Mexico Open at Vidanta Vallarta by two strokes with a score of 19-under (67-64-63-71) on Sunday, Feb. 25. Three years ago, Knapp did not have a status on any professional tour. But he used his conditional status on the Korn Ferry Tour to finish 13th in the season-long standings in 2023, and claim his PGA Tour card for this season. Knapp's victory last week came on the heels of a t-3rd finish at the Farmers Insurance Open last month.
Knapp's win punched him tickets to the Masters and PGA Championship later this year. He is also now fully exempt through the 2026 PGA TOUR season and will be in all signature events for the rest of this year.
