No. 17 Women's Tennis Falls 4-3 at No. 11 California

BERKELEY, Calif. โ The 17th-ranked UCLA women's tennis team was outlasted by No. 11 California in a 4-3 decision Saturday afternoon at Hellman Tennis Complex.
The Bruins (10-4, 4-1 Pac-12) pulled level after trailing 3-1, but Golden Bear Katja Wiersholm accounted for the deciding point. Ahmani Guichard, Kimmi Hance and Tian Fangran were victorious for UCLA in singles play. Cal (12-3, 5-0) picked up the doubles point and later for singles wins from Wiersholm, Jessica Alsola and Mao Mushika.
A pair of 6-4 victories were the difference in doubles play. Alsola and Valentina Ivanov handed the combination of Hance and Anne-Christine Lutkemeyer its first loss on Court 2. Then No. 23 Mushika and Viller Moeller bested Tian and Elise Wagle on the top court.
Singles play featured three matchups of top-100 players. No. 89 Hance's 7-6(4), 6-3 win versus No. 38 Viller Moeller on Court 2 tied the score. Hance has won four consecutive singles decisions, including two opposite top-40 foes.
Two other matches were completed in straight sets, with both going to the Golden Bears. No. 54 Alsola registered a 6-4, 6-4 victory against Lutkemeyer on Court 4 and No. 125 Mushika followed by overcoming Wagle 6-4, 7-6(7) on Court 5.
No. 59 Tian extended her personal winning streak to eight, beating No. 57 Ivanov 6-4, 2-6, 6-2 on Court 1. Tian has knocked off three nationally-ranked counterparts during her run.
Guichard sixth win in as many completed singles contests was her team-high 15th of the season. Her latest came by a 7-6(7), 3-6, 6-1 margin versus Lan Mi on Court 6 and ensured a full day of finished matches.
In the end, No. 53 Wiersholm broke No. 72 Bianca Fernandez's serve for the final game and clinching 6-4, 5-7, 6-3 win.
UCLA visits No. 5 Stanford Sunday, making up another top-20 showdown that was previously scheduled for Friday before it was rained out. First serve from Taube Family Tennis Center is scheduled for 12 p.m. PT.
