Bruins Sweep Chanticleers to Cap Perfect Opening Weekend

September 01, 2024 | Women's Volleyball

ATLANTA – The UCLA women's volleyball team used an extremely efficient attacking display to down Coastal Carolina in straight sets and complete a perfect opening weekend at the GT Invitational.

Set scores were 25-19, 25-14, and 25-15.

The Bruins racked up 39 kills with a hitting percentage of .342 in what proved to be an incredibly efficient performance from head coach Alfee Reft's team. Outside hitters Kiki Horne and Cheridyn Leverette each hauled in double-digit kills while graduate setter Audrey Pak facilitated their success, handing out 25 assists on the day. Leverette was the brightest of the bunch, registering 10 kills at a .421 clip with four digs and a pair of service aces.

The UCLA defense was formidable, holding the reigning Sun Belt champions to a hitting percentage of just .091.

Three freshmen – Anastasija Ivkovic, Brooklyn Briscoe, and Horne – were selected for their first collegiate starts and the trio contributed heavily in the win. Briscoe was a force at the middle blocker position, hitting .455 with six kills while posting three blocks on the defensive end. Horne made it back-to-back matches with the team-high in kills, putting down 11 in the contest.

Freshman setter Kate Duffey also saw action in the win, notching three assists and a dig in the final set and Ivkovic made her presence felt with her two kills in the match.

Horne knocked down a pair of kills to open the match, sparking a 3-0 run for the Bruins. The Chanticleers battled in the back-and-forth first set to even the score at 13-13, but their momentum slipped when a series of attack errors allowed UCLA to burst into the lead. Leverette and Ivkovic took advantage of the miscues by putting down two kills each to open a four-point advantage. The Bruins started to pull away when Pak's solo block gave her team the momentum to prevail 25-19 in set one. Pak made it two consecutive contests with a double-double, registering 25 assists and 10 digs.

Graduate middle blocker Anna Dodson and Leverette dealt a pair of service aces to set the tone in the second frame and the UCLA offense started firing on all cylinders. Leverette settled into a rhythm, banging out two kills and an ace to open a four-point advantage (13-9) and force a Coastal timeout. Massive blocks from Briscoe and Horne extended the lead to seven points and the Bruins started to flourish, hitting .579 in the set with 14 kills and just three errors to win the second set.

The third set was much of the same for UCLA, this time with graduate outside hitter Joy Umeh pacing the offense by connecting on a couple swings. Leverette smacked down three more kills and the Bruins coasted to finish line, grabbing the 25-15 win the final set to bring a pair of victories back to Westwood.

UCLA will face another ranked opponent on Thursday, Sept. 5 at 4 p.m. (PT) when it travels to No. 15 Tennessee. The match will be streamed on SEC Network.
