Bruins Sweep Cal to Conclude Nonconference Slate

September 21, 2024 | Women's Volleyball

BERKELEY, Calif. – The UCLA women's volleyball team concluded its nonconference schedule with a dominant performance, defeating California in straight sets on Saturday afternoon at Haas Pavilion.

Set scores were 25-17, 25-18, and 25-22.

Leading the dynamic Bruins' offense were junior outside hitter Cheridyn Leverette and graduate setter Audrey Pak, both delivering their most impressive performances of the season. UCLA (6-3) led Cal (8-4) in nearly ever statistical category including kills (49-31), hitting percentage (0.312 - 0.173) aces (5-4), blocks (6-3), and digs (54-36).

With a season-high 18 kills, Leverette was a force on both ends of the court, tallying 11 digs to record her second double-double of the season and the third of her career. The Hampton, Ga. native registered her seventh game in double-digits and did it with outstanding efficiency, hitting .371 on the day.

UCLA's setter handed out a season-best 40 assists and finished just two digs shy of a double-double of her own, snuffing out eight. Pak also came up with a season-high three blocks, including one solo block.

Junior outside hitter Grayce Olson also reached double figures, hitting a team-high .625 in her 10-kill display and graduate defensive specialist Kate Reilly kept the Golden Bears out of system with her prowess at the service line, racking up three aces in the contest.

The Bruins fell behind early in the opening set, but a massive solo block from Pak followed by a Reilly ace changed the momentum of the frame. This sparked a 3-0 run and UCLA found its groove, closing the set on an 8-0 run to win it convincingly. Leverette settled into a rhythm with five kills in the first set while the Bruin defense shined, holding the hosts to a hitting percentage of .029.

Cal began the second set by surging into an 8-3 lead, prompting a timeout from UCLA. Head Coach Alfee Reft effectively utilized the break, and the Bruins responded with a 3-0 run, initiated by an emphatic kill from Leverette for a crucial side out.

Freshman outside hitter Kiki Horne, who totaled nine kills in the match, contributed four in the second set to aid the comeback. With the score tied at 17-17, UCLA executed a decisive 5-0 run, highlighted by a kill from graduate middle blocker Anna Dodson and an ace from Reilly. This shift in momentum led the Bruins to a 25-18 victory, closing the set with a 7-1 run.

The final set mirrored the first two, with the Golden Bears establishing an early lead. Cal forced another timeout after a 6-1 run when the Bruins were out of system. Reft made another strategic adjustment, and Leverette secured a crucial side out to regain momentum. Leverette dominated the third set, recording seven kills to spearhead the comeback. With the score tied at 21-21, Leverette delivered three consecutive kills, bringing the Bruins to match point. Olson then provided the finishing blow with her 10th kill of the match, securing UCLA's fifth straight-set win of the season.

UCLA begins its new era in the Big Ten Conference when it heads to No. 5 Nebraska on Friday, Sept. 27 at 5 p.m. PT. The match will be available for viewing on Big Ten Network.
